Olivia Culpo shares health update after subchorionic hematoma during pregnancy

Olivia Culpo has revealed she experienced a health scare during her first trimester when she began “bleeding everywhere”.

The model and actress, who notably won Miss Universe in 2012, opened up about the experience on TikTok.

“I have been on bed rest for [two weeks] and before that I was sick with pneumonia so I was also sick for two weeks,” she said in a video which she shared had been filmed when she was nine weeks pregnant.

“All in all I’ve been truly on bed rest for like four weeks.”

“Towards the end of the two weeks of being really sick, I got a subchorionic hematoma, which is basically a blood clot in my uterus and I was bleeding everywhere,” she continued.

According to Cleveland Clinic, a subchorionic hematoma is “when blood forms between the wall of your uterus and the chorionic membrane during pregnancy.”

Symptoms include vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. They are most common in people who are between 10 to 20 weeks pregnant.

After two weeks of bed rest with pneumonia, Culpo says she was already exhausted then the bleeding started.

“At this point I was so exhausted [after] two weeks of just not being able to move and then all of a sudden just like purging. It was, like, a lot, it was heavy,” she says.

Culpo went to see her doctor, who she says confirmed the baby was OK but ordered her to rest.

“I went to the doctor and it was really exciting to see that there was still a heartbeat,” she said.

“She was like, ‘You can’t go anywhere, you can’t travel’, like, just truly staying in bed.”

She took a moment to express her empathy for those experiencing the same thing.

“It’s not always the worst case that you’re thinking, go to your doctor,” she said.

Culpo’s new video, which she calls a “little time capsule from 9 weeks”, comes a week after she announced that she and her husband San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, are expecting their first child.

The mum-to-be shared a photo to Instagram showing her cradling her growing baby bump.

In the caption she wrote, ” next chapter, motherhood”.

Culpo also shared a video with her 5.5 million followers, where the 28-year-old NFL star and his wife, wearing a white gown, are seen walking around a field, holding hands, and posing for photos together.

“🤍🤍,” Culpo wrote in her caption of the footage, which also showed the couple posing with their ultrasound photos.

The beauty pageant alum and McCaffrey married last June in Rhode Island, Culpo’s home state.

“It’s the beginning of the rest of your life and it’s the union and bond of two people forever,” Culpo told Vogue ahead of the wedding.
