Kate Middleton and Prince William news: detail of new dog in Mother’s Day video has fans wondering if they have a new pet

Eagle-eyed royal fans have spotted a fun detail in the Princess of Wales’ Mother’s Day video.

While Catherine, 43, and Prince William, 42, both appear in the video, neither’s face is shown, although we do see Catherine’s hands that she places on a tree and the back of Prince William’s calves as he walks ahead of the camera.

But there’s another detail people are talking about, another dog spotted in the footage.

Orla is the black Cocker Spaniel on the left, but there is also a chocolate brown Cocker Spaniel on the right who is looking up to Prince William while it enjoys the outdoor adventure.

It’s not clear if it is a new addition to the family, or another family member’s dog. 

The Princess of Wales’ brother James Middleton breeds Cocker Spaniel, and the breed has become much-loved by the family.

The Prince and Princess of Wales lost their previous brown Cocker Spaniel Lupo in 2020, which is when James introduced them to Orla.

The couple’s children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, delight in their family pets, with Orla featuring in Princess Charlotte’s birthday portraits in 2022 and 2023.

James Middleton spoke about the important role Orla played during his sister’s cancer battle in 2024.

“I know how much the dogs, for me, have helped in taking your mind off something,” he told Hello!

“So I’m certain that for them, Orla is doing her job in supporting her family.”

He too has been saved by his beloved dogs, in particular a Cocker Spaniel named Ella whom he leaned on during the worst of his mental health battle.

James, 37, wrote a memoir called Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life in which he chronicled his experience. Ella has since passed away. James’ sister Pippa has one of Ella’s sons and Orla, owned by the Prince and Princess of Wales, is Ella’s granddaughter.

New photo released for Princess of Wales’s 43rd birthday

The Prince of Wales revealed to a fan that he and Catherine often sleep with Orla in their bed as well. He made the comment while visiting Duchy College in Cornwall, England in October 2023.

During the trip William stopped to pat a royal supporter Louise Harland’s dog Jacks.

She spoke of the experience on Hits Radio Cornwall, saying William was “absolutely in love with my little dog”.

“He asked what breed he was and he’s never met one of those breeds, he’s a Cockerjack, so he’s a little bit of a unique combination,” she said.

The royal also told Harland that “his little dog sleeps on the bed with them at night, with him and Kate,” referring to their dog Orla.
