Top baby names in Australia for 2025: McCrindle name report reveals most popular boys and girls names

Australia’s top baby names for 2025 have been unveiled, and one boy’s name has dominated the ranking for the 12th consecutive year.

McCrindle has analysed baby names nationwide for almost a decade, compiling a list of the most popular names for boys and girls each year.

Interestingly, the 2025 report reveals Oliver has maintained the top baby boy name title, while 2024’s most popular girl’s name has fallen by two ranks in a year.

These are names that will define a generation, as the entirety of Generation Alpha (2010-2024) has now officially been born.

Here are the top 10 names for baby boys and girls in 2025.:

  4. Henry 
  5. Luca 
  6. Leo 
  7. Hudson

  9. Jack

Top 10 girls’ names in Australia

  1. Charlotte 
  2. Amelia
  3. Isla
  4. Olivia
  5. Mia
  6. Hazel 
  7. Harper
  8. Matilda 
  9. Sophie 
  10. Grace

A whopping 30,818 Gen Alphas were named Oliver, and 24,256 Gen Alphas were named Charlotte, the leading girl’s name. 

Theodore and Hazel are two names that have experienced incredible growth in popularity among Generation Alpha. Both names were ranked in the 90s in 2010 and have increased to a top-10 position today. 

Other names that have encountered similar growth in popularity across this generation include Arthur, Arlo, Muhammad, Harvey, Hudson, Archer and Austin for boys, and Luna, Maeve, Florence, Aria, Billie, Millie, Elsie, Daisy, Eleanor, Mila, Evelyn, Harper and Ellie, for girls.

It comes as no surprise to us Aussies that nicknames continue to be used as first names, with names like Leo (short for Leonardo), Billy (William), Frankie (Frances), and Lottie (Charlotte) becoming popular.

The report reveals parents increasingly prefer unique names while nodding to tradition and family names through middle names. 

Of parents surveyed, 65% say they would be more likely to choose a unique name than a popular one (35%).

A lifetime of fortune: Baby names inspired by luck

Those who are younger are more likely to choose a unique name compared to their older counterparts (83 per cent Gen Z, 71 per cent Gen Y, 60 per cent Gen X, 43 per cent Baby Boomers).
