Mould cleaning hacks: Expert’s three-ingredient DIY spray combats mould and leaves showers sparkling

When it comes to DIY solutions for cleaning mould, vinegar is always top of the list.

However, a professional cleaner recommends adding one key ingredient to really get rid of the fungi and prevent it from coming back.

The expert from Adam’s Cleaning told the Daily Express that tea tree oil is the secret weapon because of its antimicrobial properties.

Tea tree oil can also get deep into the mould spores to kill them while also sanitising surfaces. Used regularly this makes mould less likely to appear.

Tea tree oil can be found at major supermarkets for less than $10 and is also available at chemists and health food stores.

Adding tea tree oil to a vinegar cleaning spray also helps disinfect surfaces, while the vinegar is great at breaking down soap scum as well as killing mould.

”Unlike harsh chemical cleaners, tea tree oil is a natural and environmentally friendly alternative. It poses no threat to your health or the environment, making it ideal for use in enclosed spaces like bathrooms,” they said.

To make the solution add a cup of warm water, half a cup of vinegar and 15 drops of tea tree oil to a spray bottle.

Then spray this on surfaces in your shower and bathroom, focusing on mouldy areas. Wait 10 minutes for the ingredients to kill the mould and break down any soap scum and hardwater stains present.

Next, scrub surfaces with a cloth, non-scratch scourer or soft-bristled brush – old toothbrushes work well for mouldy grout and rinse with water.

Remove excess water with a squeegee and use a cloth to wipe the entire surface dry. This final step goes even further to preventing future mould growth by removing moisture.

The less moisture is able to remain on surfaces the less you’ll see mould developing in the room.

However, if you do all of those things and mould keeps coming back or looks like it’s coming from under the walls or tiles it’s time to call in the professionals as there may be a leak that needs fixing.
