The top 100 baby names in Australia have been revealed and some classic names haven’t made the cut as new parents begin to favour less traditional monikers.
McCrindle has released the 2025 Baby Names Australia report which observes baby naming trends throughout the country and several names that were among the 100 most popular in 2023 slipped out of the top ranks in 2024.
The classic boys’ names Michael, Hamish, Owen, Zachary and Charles have all dropped in popularity and fallen off the Top 100 list.

Overall 16 names dropped out of the Top 100 list. Nine of those were boy names.
As for the girls, seven names have slipped from the Top 100 list.
But interestingly, these names are less traditional names than that of the boys cohort.
The biggest change was the name Thea, which dropped a whopping 93 places in McCrindle’s ranking. The name just scraped into the Top 100 list in 2023 at number 95 but in 2024 moved down to 188.
The names Harlow, Quinn, Cleo, Peyton, Athena and Lara have also dropped from the Top 100.

According to McCrindle, there is a growing preference for less traditional baby names.
“After surveying different generations of parents and those planning to become parents across he nation, we found there is a preference for unique names over traditional ones,” McCrindle noted in the report.
“This trend is being driven by younger generations, who are embracing unique names more than any generation before them.”
