Allegra Spender gives her take on Gen Z

Allegra Spender isn’t your average politician.

And after interviewing her on my podcast, I’m even more convinced of this.

I launched my series, The Pay Off, with the two men vying to be our Prime Minister;  Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.

And whoever lands in the Lodge will likely need the support of Teal Independents like Allegra Spender if polling, which puts us on track for a minority government, is to be believed.

And you can bet that Spender, if re-elected in the seat of Wentworth, will use that influence to advocate for young Australians.

Whether it’s housing solutions, rental protections or tax reform, she has become a prominent voice for young people in her electorate.

In asking Allegra if she’s willing to work with whoever becomes our next Prime Minister, she said, “I said I would and I mean that sincerely… I’ve always said I will work with both… I’m not afraid to negotiate with anyone”.

Allegra continues, “My community wants me to back any idea if it’s a good one, not because one side said it”.

When I asked her for her thoughts on the narrative that Gen Z are spending frivolously on avocado toast and trips around the world, her stance was clear…

“That’s absolutely completely untrue… the data actually shows younger Australians are spending less on non-essentials compared to previous generations”.

Allegra elaborates further, “House prices have gone up four times, wages have only gone up two times… That should tell you everything.”

Wherever you sit on the political spectrum, you will see there’s more to Allegra than her presence in parliament. As someone who grew up surrounded by business and politics, she has a rich personal story to share.

As the daughter of the late Australian fashion designer Carla Zampatti, one of Australia’s great immigrant success stories, I asked what lessons her mum instilled in her when it comes to finance and career…

“I’m the daughter of someone who came to Australia with nothing and was able to build a really good life”, Allegra shares.

“I worked every single school holiday in her business from about age eleven… She wanted me to learn the value of hard work”.

“For me, it’s why I’m so passionate. I want this country to be a place where it doesn’t matter who your parents are, you will succeed.”
