The eighth edition of one of Ikea’s most iconic and celebrated ranges is now in store, with the biggest and most diverse product range yet.
Inspired by and named after the Swedish city the Stockholm collection, the new range features more materials, colours and prints than ever before.
“You’ll see familiar elements like rattan, which has been a standout in previous collections, and the use of solid wood veneer that’s a signature material,” Karin Gustavsson, creative lead for Ikea’s Stockholm collection tells 9honey Living in an Australian exclusive interview.

“But what makes this edition different is the variety. While past collections have focused on coordinating tones and materials, this time we’ve mixed things up more. We’ve brought in more diversity, with more materials and forms that interact with one another to create interesting expressions.
“For example, the new sofas and storage units have more character and flexibility, and we’ve expanded into areas like lighting and smaller accessories, which weren’t as prominent before.”

Gustavsson says there was never a plan to make this Stockholm collection the largest ever with a total of 96 products, but the three designers working on the range came up with so many brilliant ideas that saying no wasn’t an option.
“The pieces just kept coming, and we realised we had the opportunity to create something with a lot of depth,” she says.
“We wanted to make sure each piece stood on its own but still worked together as a whole, so we focused on making sure everything felt cohesive, even though we had such a diverse range of materials and styles.
“It was a fun challenge to find that balance, but I think the result speaks for itself.”

Prices for products in the collection cover a range of budgets, with homewares as low as $6 for a mug and $15 for a cushion cover.
Furniture pieces, meanwhile, range from $119 for a pine veneer side table to $2,999 for a three-seater leather sofa.
Gustavsson’s three favourite products from the collection give an idea of just how broad yet cohesive the pieces are and prove you can find something you like no matter how much you can spend.
“I always find it hard to pick just one, but if I had to, I’d say the bench with pad is a personal favorite. The combination of the beautiful wooden frame and the leather cushion feels timeless, and it’s a piece that can fit into any home, whether it’s in a living room or a bedroom,” she says.

“Another favorite of mine is the glass cabinet. It’s such a versatile piece – you can style it in so many different ways, and it’s perfect for showcasing your favorite items.
“It also works well as a room divider, which I love. It’s one of those pieces that gets better with age and usage, and I think it will be something people keep for years.

“But if I had to choose one that I think will really resonate with people, it’s the brass candleholder. It’s simple but feels really substantial.
“The weight of it adds a beauty to any space, and it’s one of those pieces that quietly elevates a room.”

While the Stockholm collection takes inspiration from Sweden’s natural beauty, Gustavsson believes the range will fit beautifully into Australian homes since we have just as close of a relationship to the environment around of us as they do.
“Similar to Sweden, Australia is also connected to raw, beautiful landscapes, with homes reflecting that same sense of calm and simplicity. That’s why I think so many will feel a natural connection to Stockholm – it’s designed with the same appreciation for nature at heart,” she says.

Layering rooms with a cosy rug and adding throws in bold colours will have your room set for winter. (Ikea)
With winter approaching Down Under, Gustavsson shared some tips for styling the new pieces to make our homes look and feel cosy.
She says it’s all about layering natural materials and warm tones while working in bold and colourful patterns to add your own personality to the space.
“I’d start with one of the handwoven wool rugs, with their rich textures and natural colours, which add warmth underfoot. The merino wool throws in deep, warm tones are also a great way to bring in that extra comfort. Lighting is another key element – whether it’s the chandeliers or one to put on the table, they can help you get that cosy vibe,” she says.
