King Frederik and Queen Mary welcomed to Fredensborg Palace as they take up residence for the summer

King Frederik and Queen Mary have received a warm welcome as they arrived at their summer residence north of Copenhagen.

The Danish royals spent time meeting locals who lined the forecourt of Fredensborg Palace, where the King and Queen will spend the summer months.

Two other members of family joined the gathering too: Grace and Coco, their brown and white border collies.

It is tradition for the Danish royal family to change residences throughout the year.

Their main home is Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg in Copenhagen, where they live with their children Crown Prince Christian, 19, Princess Isabella, 18, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13.

The royals call Frederik VIII’s Palace home during winter before moving north to Fredensborg, which is often described as Denmark’s Versailles.

King Frederik and Queen Mary live in the Chancellery House, attached to Fredensborg Palace, which underwent a number of changes following Queen Margrethe II’s abdication in January, 2024.

The building is connected to the main palace via the stables and the chapel and frames the eastern part of the complex.

Chancellery House was the first marital home for Mary and Frederik and remained their main residence until renovations at Frederik VIII’s Palace were complete.

Built in 1731, the building was constructed for the King’s ministers and government officials, hence its name.

The palace was built in 1750-60 and was later home to King Frederik’s beloved grandmother, Queen Ingrid, until her death in 2000.

Following the change of throne, a number of changes were made to Chancellery House to reflect the new monarch.

King Frederik’s cypher was added to the guards’ stations outside Fredensborg in May last year soon before the royal couple took up residency for the summer for the first time as King and Queen.

And in August, Queen Mary gave the public a rare glimpse of a new annex to the residence which had been recently renovated.

On Sunday, the King and Queen attended commemorations marking 80 years since Denmark’s liberation after World War Two.

They were joined by Queen Margrethe II and Princess Benedikte for the service inside Copenhagen Cathedral.

The memorial was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, from Britain.

Queen Mary wore a navy blue crepe dress designed by Soeren Le Schmidt and sewn by Birgit Hallstein, the two dressmakers behind Mary’s accession day outfit.

Later, the royals moved to a wreath laying ceremony in Hellerup, north of the capital.

Last week, King Frederik travelled to Greenland amid ongoing threats by President Donald Trump that the island should become part of the United States.
