Baby names: Naming expert Colleen Slagen on the names she is glad she didn’t name her kids

Pregnancy can do a lot of strange things to you, but for some it will totally change how you feel about certain things (hello, food cravings or make you fall in love with baby names.

Some names are great, but won’t work in the long run despite how badly you want to go with them – and it’s something even baby name expert Colleen Slagen went through.

The professional namer, known by Naming Bebe on TikTok, shared her own experience and revealed why she’s so glad she didn’t go with a couple of specific names.

“Most people have their list of boy and girl names when they’re naming their baby, but it can be really hard and so sometimes you find yourself grasping at straws,” she said in a video on TikTok.

She explained it can feel like trying to “discover” a name you hadn’t thought of.

“This was definitely the case for us with George because I was feeling very uninspired with boy names when I was pregnant with him,” Slagen recalled.

“We didn’t know we were having and we were set on the girl name.

‘At one point I was convinced that we should name him Buchanan, which is a family surname, which is cool… but it just so does not fit us and what would we call him? Bucky?”

She joked that your mind does “crazy things” when you’re pregnant.

But she went through a similar situation when naming her daughter too.

“One name I tried to make happen was Marie Eve and call her Maeve,” she said.

“And it’s just, it’s trying too hard to make a family name work like I would have just done Maeve.”

Slagen said there were so many things that she overthought with names when she was pregnant, but now she can see it clearly.

There are obviously names that were just never going to work for her family, and she asked others to share theirs – and her followers did not disappoint.

“I love Lowen for a girl but we tested it at multiple Starbucks and restaurants and everyyyy single time they said Owen. I couldnt set my girl up for failure constantly having to correct people (especially since we have a tough last name),” commented one.

Another mum replied, “Otto. I still love it, but when my husband said it out loud we only heard ‘auto’.”

“Murphy. It’s such a cute name but it’s just NOT the name of my daughter,” commented one mum.

Others shared their names with difficult pronunciations or vibes which now their kids are actually here, just do not work at all.
