Any parent who has faced the challenge of brushing the knotty hair of their child knows it can be a nightmare for everyone involved.
Trying to power through a clump of knotty hair is one of those ordeals that ends up with a screaming child, bribes and just trying to do it as quickly as possible.
But it turns out there’s a very simple hack for brushing hair and it eliminates the pain of brushing through knots completely.
A mum on Instagram shared her helpful hack and explained that you’re basically brushing hair wrong.

“I wish more mums knew turning the hairbrush vertical makes getting out tangles so much easier,” read the text over the top of the clip.
In the video, the woman is brushing her daughter’s hair, dragging the brush down horizontally, like you normally would.
She keeps getting stuck on a huge clump of tangles, with the brush really pulling on the knots and getting stuck.
Then she turns the hairbrush vertically and it glides straight through the hair, smoothing out the knots.

It’s insane how much just turning the brush changes the results, with the tangles coming straight out using the vertical technique.

The video, which was captioned “Share this hack with all your mama friends”, not only impressed parents but women on Instagram too.
“I’ve been brushing my own hair wrong my whole life,” commented one woman.
Another replied, “What? I was this old when I found this out? My daughters and granddaughters will be glad to learn this, too! All super long haired and so hard to detangle!”
“Now I know what to do for my granddaughters,” commented another grandma.

Others commented that this is the kind of hack dads need to know too.
And while the tip was great, a lot of other parents suggested that when you’re brushing long knotty hair you need to start at the bottom.

“Also, start from the bottom! Not the top,” commented one person.
Another echoed that and replied, “Brushing from the bottom up also helps, especially the longer your hair is.”
Here’s hoping this tip saves a lot of meltdowns and tears when it comes time to brush out the knots next.
