There are plenty names we consider them timeless, but only a handful are actually considered “timeless”.
Dr. Hannah Emerya self-described “colossal name nerd” with a PhD in sociology, says there are only six names – including a girl’s name – that meet these criteria.
In 1880, the first U.S. Social Security Administration began recording the popularity of names, and since then only a handful of names have remained in the Top 50.

During a interview with the US Today showexplained Dr. Emery explains that names are a “cultural product”.
Names are expressions of identity that vary based on social groups, gender, culture and socio-economic background.
Even taking all of this into account, there are only six names, five for boys and one girl’s name, that have remained at the top of the US charts for the past 145 years.

Dr. Emery also noted that John, James and William “have actually been in the Top 20 all the way through.”
But why are there so many boys’ names on the list?
There are a few reasons, but the main one is that there are simply fewer boy names to choose from, and boys are more likely to be named after family members, which also reduces the pool.
“The US has historically had such a strong Christian influence that it is not surprising that most of our long-standing popular names come from Jewish and Christian scriptures,” she added.
She thinks the name Ezra might even move up the charts this year because of its Biblical associations, and that it’s a different, but not too different, name option.
Australian parents have long been into timeless and classic baby names, with many names remaining in the top charts for years to come.

New data from BabyCentre which was released in March, found that there are quite a few names that have been in the top 50 for both boys and girls for over twenty years.
BabyCenter started publishing public reports on baby names in 2004, and this data has revealed the names that really have staying power, even if we’re not talking almost 150 years like the names before.
While some trends take off quicklythey seem to fade away just as quickly, and these names for boys and girls prove it they really stand the test of time.
These are the names that have been in the top 50 for over 20 years. There are 10 names for girls and 14 for boys, according to BabyCentre data.
