San Diego Islamic Center mosque shooting active situation two killed

Two people are dead and police say the “threat has been neutralized” after an active shooting at a mosque in San Diego on the US west coast left the streets on lockdown.

San Diego police said there were no other shooters at the scene.

Police said the scene was “active but contained,” with officers escorting children and adults from the building.

Senior police officials told local NBC news reporters that one of the suspected gunmen is dead.

Authorities have not yet revealed a specific motive for the shooting, but a briefing is expected within hours.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said he was informed.

“We are grateful to the first responders on the ground who are working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow the guidelines of local authorities,” his office wrote on the social platform X.

Sharp Memorial Hospital confirmed it was receiving patients related to the shooting.

“Our emergency procedures have been activated and we are coordinating with the County of San Diego and other resources to respond to the incident,” Sharp spokeswoman Alicia Cook said.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the shooting as a “heinous act of violence.”

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this attack,” the group said in a statement. “No one should ever fear for their safety while attending prayers or studying in a primary school.”
