Laundry detergent eliminates bacteria and germs while keeping your clothes smelling fresh, and with winter sickness fast approaching, it’s a great thing to have on hand.

It’s not necessary for every wash, although some people claim it can improve the smell of stale towels and even your washing machine.

Other places like Coles and Woolworths sell other brands of laundry disinfectants.

One TikTok user shared her experience with using detergent for the first time last year and although she usually used vinegar, she was sold at the exchange.

“I immediately noticed that the laundry smelled better and I cleaned my laundry [washing machine] bathtub, my washing machine is being thoroughly cleaned. Took away all the odors,” Jewelry designer Laura from Mermaid & Bear said on TikTok.

“Very shocked because I’m a vinegar girl, I like vinegar in my laundry but… [Coles Ultra laundry sanitiser] on your towels and sheets I smell my laundry, it just smells clean, cleaner than before. I feel like all the st has been taken off.”

Fourth-generation dry cleaner Zachary Pozniak explained what laundry detergent is and how to use it in a TikTok video.

He cited a study by academics at the University of Arizona that found disinfectant does not need to be used daily nor does it protect against viruses.

“The only time you need a disinfectant is for specific illnesses like stomach flu and diarrhea, because these specific bacteria can live in our clothes for weeks and make other people sick,” he explained.

Tips and hacks that make washing less difficult

Pozniak added that detergent should be used after clothes have been washed with a good detergent.

While detergent is not necessary to kill all infectious diseases, anecdotally it appears to be useful for removing odor-causing bacteria. So if you find that you can’t get odors out of clothes, towels, or sheets, it might be worth a try.
