Australia-first cancer centre for children opens in Sydney

A Australian-First cancer center has opened in Sydney and promises to provide world-leading care for children and young people with cancer.
The Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCCC). Sydney Children Hopital in Randwick has the capacity to house 900 pediatric cancer professionals, and has world-class equipment and state-of-the-art care for children in need.

The center was completed at a cost of $658 million, with both the federal and state governments supporting the project.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said the opening of the center was something all Australians should be proud of.

“For the first time in Australia’s history, we have a purpose-built, fully integrated cancer center for children and young people, focused solely on improving their healthcare outcomes,” he said.

“This world-class facility will revolutionize the model of care for children with cancer.”

The center will combine research with patient care, and will also have teaching and training facilities, which will be used by the University of New South Wales.

The project is supported by the Minderoo Foundation, founded by Australian billionaire Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest.

He said the Sydney center would change people’s lives in the fight against childhood cancer.

“Cancer, especially childhood cancer, is an insidious thief. Our goal has always been to stop that thief and make childhood cancer non-lethal,” he said.

“The industry-leading facilities now accessible to families will give our physicians and scientists the resources and space they need to achieve that goal.”
