Baby name: Mum accuses her friend of being a ‘baby name thief’

A mum has accused a “good friend” of copying her son’s “unique and meaningful” baby name, but not everyone is on her side.

She has shared her complaint on Reddit’s ‘Am I The A–hole’ thread.

“A good friend of mine copied the name of my son,” she wrote.

“This name was unique and meaningful as it honored a family member who passed. Fast forward 1 year, she posts her son’s birth announcement on FB and it’s the same as mine,” the woman continued.

“When I congratulated her, I said ‘so cute that our kiddos have the same name’. She completely ignored it and went on to talk about something else.”

The woman then asked: “Am I the ahole for being so bothered by this? Or is she the a hole for copying my name and not acknowledging it?”

Now, there’s a lot of feelings that come with baby names, but most people nicely told the woman to get over it.

One Redditer commented: “Yes. Who cares? Lots of people have the same name.”

“Oh my God you know. Unless you gave the child such a unique name that you legally copyrighted and trademarked at. You don’t have sole legal right to that name,” another replied.

“Your child does not own a name, period. It’s selfish to act this way, and be bugged by another mothers choice. Her child has just as much right to be called a name, as yours,” another wrote.

“I have a very common name, and honestly I think it’s totally fine that I share my name with other people.”

One Redditer said the friend “could be more sensitive or at least expressive about it but you’re clearly unhappy about it as well and that may make her not want to”.

Another commented: “Just phase her out of your social circle and you won’t have to hear it.”

“Honestly that’s kinda weird of her,” one added.

“Guess she isn’t a good friend after all,” another wrote, adding that the friend clearly “isn’t even original, she has to use the name you picked out”.
