Baby names: expert Colleen Slagen reveals what name has replaced Marie has a popular middle name

It’s one of the most common middle names given to girls in the ’80s and ’90s – and if it’s not yours, chances are you know someone with the moniker: Marie.

While it’s less common to hear that middle name given children these days, that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been a replacement. So, what is the new “Marie”?

Well, baby name expert Colleen Slagen, who runs the namingbebe TikTok has the answer.

“In terms of name trendiness, [the new Marie and Elizabeth] has to be James,” she said.

“Everyone is using this, I hear it everywhere, with every type of name style.”

Slagen said the name has become so popular, and while she wants to hate it, it just sounds too good.

Three other modern options, she says, are Mae, Lou and Belle.

“I still hear my fair share of Grace, Rose and Jane in the middle – which I love – but it is more in vogue now to give your child this stylish and stunning first and middle name combination that will be printed on an Etsy banner above their crib.”

Many people weighed in on the trend in the comments and a few people that either worked with children, or had girls with those trendy names, explained Slagen nailed it.

“I work with children for a living and I’m going to say that it is James, Mae, and Rose,” replied one woman.

Another commented, “ROSE!! Rose is the new Marie… I know so many kids under 10 with Rose.”

“I work in the OB/GYN clinic.. I’ve never heard of James used for a girl. Mae, Rose, Leigh, and Grace – popular,” replied another.

One woman joked that she felt personally called out by the video and commented, “Not me with my middle name Marie and kid’s middle name James.”
