Bakers Delight unveils radical new store change – and it could trigger a massive national expansion

Baker’s delight is trialling a new ‘cheaper, highly efficient’ Metro store in Camberwell, Victoria.

This compact model features a streamlined product range, self-serve coffee and heated food stations.

If the pilot is successful, these smaller, faster bakeries may soon expand to a location near you.

A Bakers Delight spokesperson told nine.com.au: “The lessons we learn from this trial could lead to further rollout across our bakeries.

“For now it’s just a one-off.”

The new Metro locations are not intended to replace traditional Bakers Delight stores.

Instead, they will work together to provide the company with a more cost-effective way to execute its expansion plans, which will see the company grow from 520 bakeries to 700 by 2030.

David Christie, Joint CEO of Bakers Delight, described this new store model as a “game-changer for our network”.

“It’s a lower-cost, highly efficient format that delivers a strong return on investment and opens the door to new locations and franchise opportunities,” he said.

“The smaller, more affordable store design will enable more franchise opportunities at a faster pace.

“The Camberwell Place bakery is more than just a new store. It is a strategic investment in the future of the brand.”

And so far, customer feedback has only been positive.

“With strong early performance and positive feedback from both customers and franchisees, the model is poised to play a central role in Bakers Delight’s 2030 growth vision,” Christie added.

“It’s still early days, but this model is a great example of how our proven company can evolve to meet the needs of a new generation of customers and entrepreneurs.”

The pilot store opened in September 2025 and sells just 54 food products, compared to more than 100 products in their traditional stores.

Next to the self-service heated food cabinets are fully automatic Franke coffee machines filled with Grinders coffee beans for customers to pick from.

Bakers Delight has assured locals that their traditional store on nearby Riverdale Road is not going anywhere and will continue trading.

In fact, a number of Bakers Delight’s traditional locations are also getting a makeover.

This started with the renovation of their Malvern Central location in April, which was temporarily closed for the duration of the renovation process.

Four additional locations will also close for renovations between now and the end of May.

These locations are Unley in South Australia, which will close its doors from April 27 to May 8, and Springfield in New South Wales, which will close its stores from May 11 to May 23.

These makeovers include more streamlined displays and “efficiencies” and the addition of service counters for delivery companies.

Malvern East reopened just in time for Mother’s Day on May 10.

For Mother’s Day, Bakers Delight is a limited edition Pink Cruffin Twin Pack for $9.60, with $1 from each twin pack sold going to the Breast Cancer Network (BCNA).

This will lead to Bakers Delight’s annual Pink Bun campaign for BCNA, which kicks off on May 14.

Bakers Delight’s new cruffins range is a recent addition to the bakery chain’s range. Bakers Delight launched two cruffin flavors for customers to enjoy in 2026: Choc Hazelnut and Custard.

Cruffins are currently on sale for $4.80 each
