One man has got the internet talking about the way he makes his bed from the inside out.
Conor O’Brien showed what he thinks is a clever method for making his bed in a TikTok video.
“This is something that I do that I’ve never seen done before,” he shared, “When I wake up in the morning, I make my bed from inside the bed.”

He then demonstrated how he propped up his pillows, tucked in the corners of his comforter and “[shimmied] his way out” before finally smoothing his comforter.
“My feet touch the ground, my bed’s already made… it is a wonderful way to start the day,” he said.
But the comment section was flooded with many who burst his bubble, telling him that making his bed first thing in the morning is creating the perfect environment for dust mites.

“This is great in theory, but those sheets need to [breathe] a bit. You’re just tucking the bed mites,” said one.
“People really should stop ‘making’ their bed closed, the only ‘making’ is to OPEN that blanket to vent out the sweat, damp and condensation so the bed bugs don’t throw a party all day for you to join,” another added.
“At some point in my life I received the information that dust mites proliferate expeditiously in a made bed and I refuse to even look it up to confirm, because I feel justified not making my bed,” one said.

Another added, “Neat and tidy and lovely colour scheme but do you not know to shake the sheets in the morning to avoid bed bugs.”
One commenter noted, ”I never understood why anyone would have to ‘make the bed’. It’s my bed, it’s supposed to be my casual and chill place. Moreover, tidying your bed traps dust mites so that ain’t super healthy…”
Experts such as Dr Manal Mohammed, Lecturer, Medical Microbiology at the University of Westminster recommend to leave your bed unmade for a while, for example, for 30 minutes to an hour after you get out in order to air it out.

It turns out there’s a reason why no one does it this way. (TikTok/@cobreezzy)
“Since we can’t wash our sheets every day, one thing you can do daily is air your sheet every morning. Since moisture builds up in them while we’re sleeping, pulling the duvet back so the bed sheets can breathe before making the bed means your sheets and mattress become a less attractive nesting spot for bacteria and [dust] mites,” Dr Mohammed wrote in an article for The Conversation.
However, this goes against years of messaging telling us it is good to make your bed first thing in the morning.
Retired U.S. Navy Admiral William H. McCraven popularised the idea of making your bed as soon as you get up in his commencement speech to graduates at the University of Texas in 2014. He then went on to write a book promoting this concept.

“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed,” he said in the famous speech.
“If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”
McCraven also said it reinforces the importance of the little things in life and if you have a bad day, at least you’ll be coming home to a made bed.
