Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has called Australia “weak” for not joining the US and Israel in their attacks on Iran.
Writing in the Daily TelegraphAbbott said Australia should have supported the US and called the strikes a “just cause”.
“Weakness is provocative, and since the government refused the Biden-era request to send a frigate to the Red Sea – the first time since the ANZUS Treaty in 1951 that we had rejected a US request for military assistance – Australia has been a weak country; lacking not only military capacity but, worse, the will to use it,” Abbott said.
Despite the US not consulting its allies ahead of the air invasion, Abbott insisted Australia should have understood that action against Iran was “imminent” and contacted the White House to offer assistance.
“By ostentatiously distancing ourselves from the current conflict and doing even less than the cowardly British government, we have not only failed our most important ally, but also betrayed our values and our long-term national interest,” Abbott wrote.
According to the Albanian government, the US has not made a specific request for military assistance, despite US President Donald Trump complaining that Australia had not joined the attack.
Australia has sent military assets to allies in the Middle East to serve as a defensive capability against Iranian attacks.
