Best and worst dishwashing liquids: The $1.79 dishwashing liquid that outperformed some of the biggest supermarket brands

The best in Australia supermarket dishwashing liquid were decided by consumer group Choice, who tested 30 popular options to determine which offers the best value for money.

The two brands that dominated the results are Morning Fresh and Palmolive.

The overall winner is Morning Fresh Ultimate Pro Brilliance dishwashing liquid, which took first place with an impressive score of 90 percent.

Coles and Woolworths sell Morning Fresh Ultimate Pro Brilliance washing up liquid for $6 for 350ml, so it’s not the most affordable washing up liquid, but it goes a long way.

A more budget-friendly choice is the runner-up, Aldi Tandil Ultra Dry Raspberry and Apple, which scored an 85 percent rating and costs just $1.79 for 450ml.

Two others received an 85 percent rating: Palmolive Ultra Gentle Care Mild Fragrance Dishwashing Liquid, which usually costs $9.50 for 900ml but is on special at Woolworths this week for $6.50, and Morning Fresh Antibac Active Lemon Ultra Concentrate Dishwashing Liquid, which costs $6 for 350ml.

One product that Choice did not rate highly is Ecostore Lemon Dish Liquid, which received a low rating of 55 percent.

Three additional Palmolive products received an 80 percent rating.

These are Palmolive Lemon Lime with citrus extracts, normal dishwashing liquid, Palmolive Ultra Mango Magic concentrated dishwashing liquid and Palmolive Ultra Strength Original dishwashing liquid.

Some brands did not score well according to the Choice experts, some scored lower than plain water.

The lowest rated dishwashing liquid is Ecostore Lemon Dish Liquid at 55 percent.

Aldi Green Action Lemongrass and Ginger Antibacterial Dishwashing Liquid, Aldi Tandil Antibacterial Lemon Fights Germs, Aldi Tandil Lemon Dishwashing Liquid, Aldi Tandil Ultra Antibacterial Lemon, Coles Ultra Concentrate Lemon Burst Dishwashing Liquid and Ecostore Ultrasensitive Dishwashing Liquid Fragrance Free, all scored 60 percent.

Overall, Choice’s findings concluded that buying based on brand alone does not guarantee good performance.

“Our testing revealed some wild variations, so never assume that if one product cleans well, similar products from the same brand will deliver the same results,” says Choice home care expert Chris Barnes.

“It’s worth keeping this in mind when you’re shopping, otherwise you could accidentally pick up an inferior product.

“Also, don’t assume that an expensive product will perform better than a cheap one; our testing has shown that price is not a measure of performance.”

The same applies if you expect the detergent you’ve always used to continue to provide good results.

“The reason we test every year is because manufacturers often change the formula to improve performance or reduce cost, so check back with us every year to see which products are the best,” said Barnes.

But if you shop smart, you can find an affordable dish soap that offers value for money and good performance, a benefit for your dishes and your wallet, he adds.
