British royals set to make a balcony appearance next month

The British royal family will appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace next month in a show of unity following a period of turmoil.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will be joined by senior working royals on May 5 to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The royals will watch a military procession from Whitehall to Buckingham Palace before gathering on the balcony to watch the traditional fly over by the Red Arrows display team.

Charles, 76, and Camilla, 77, will be joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

William and Catherine’s children Prince William, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will join their parents for the event, just days after Charlotte’s 10th birthday on May 2.

Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will also be joined by their children Lady Louise, 21 and James, Earl of Wessex, 17.

Other working members of the royal family expected to appear include the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent.

Four days of commemorations marking then end of World War II begin around the country on May 5. 

Events will begin with the Cenotaph dressed in Union flags while the royals view a military procession from Whitehall to Buckingham Palace, followed by the Red Arrows display team in central London.

The parade will pass the famous balcony where Winston Churchill appeared before the crowds on VE Day after his famous speech to mark victory in Europe and the end of World War II.

As the parade enters Horse Guards Parade the flypast will take place.

The last time the royals made a balcony appearance was on June 15, 2024 for Trooping the Colour. The Princess of Wales delighted royal fans at the time by joining the royals for their balcony appearance amid her ongoing cancer battle.

This was Catherine’s first appearance in six months since first announcing a break from royal duties.

The royal appeared in a car alongside her husband and children. She announced she was in remission from the disease in January 2025.

King Charles, 76, and Queen Camilla, 77, marked their 20th wedding anniversary during their four-day state visit to Italy.

Charles also addressed a joint sitting of both the Upper and Lower Houses (Senate and Deputies, respectively) in Italian Parliament on Wednesday, becoming the first British monarch to do so.
