A cleaner has revealed a bargain Bunnings buy works just as well as a professional grout cleaning brush for a fraction of the cost.
Jack Croukamp from Clean Like a Pro is a fan of Oates long handle grout brush, which costs just $11.79 at the hardware store.
Compared to the cost of a professional grout cleaning brush, the Oates version is a saving of $158.21 for the same level of performance.

”I found the bristles firm enough to do just as good a job as [the professional grout cleaning brush] I bought. So it’s the angle of the brushes that I found works really well, it’s exactly the same angle. It’s longer in the middle and then shorter towards the side of the brush. It’s perfectly angled for grout cleaning so it fits really well into the grout,” he tells 9honey.
“It also has the swivel head which makes it easier if you start scrubbing the grout, because you don’t have to just then scrub one way, which is great as well.”
The best kitchen cleaning hacks that actually work
Croukamp and his wife/business partner Kate showed in a TikTok video how well the grout cleaning brush worked on kitchen tile grout covered with a thick layer of grease buildup.
They paired the brush with a cleaning product you might never have considered to use on your grout and that’s a degreaser.

But the couple didn’t just use any degreaser, they tried their own Pro Degreaser which is designed to break down fats and oil without harsh chemicals.
Croukamp explained why the degreaser was a good choice for the floor tile grout and while it makes a lot of sense, it’s probably something you’ve never considered.
“With your floor grout we all have natural oils on the soles of your feet so those natural oils pick up the soiling from wherever you walk with your bare feet and that’s what you walk into the grout… So you need to be able to break through that oil or grease buildup,” he says.

“It’s not just in kitchens, believe it or not, it’s on all your floor grout. You need to get through the grease buildup that comes from bare feet. That’s why the degreaser worked that well.”
However, it’s not advised to use just any degreaser you see at the shop or have at home because some contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin and eyes, have strong fumes and discolour the grout. So you’ll need to check the ingredients to see whether it’s suitable first.

Once the grout on the kitchen floor was all scrubbed Croukamp used a wet wring mop to wash the dirt away.
“Don’t ring the mop out too much, don’t get it too dry. Put a fair bit of water all over the tiles and the grout that you’ve scrubbed and then go again with the same wring mop and wring it out a bit more, get it a lot drier or as dry as you can and then mop over that again and then just let it air out and dry,” he adds.

Once that’s done Croukamp says it’ll be easy to tell when the grout is getting dirty again and spot cleaning high traffic areas will keep the grout in good condition so that you can wait longer between deep cleans.
Professional grout cleans can be expensive so to save yourself hundreds of dollars it helps to maintain it.
“Those are sort of tips and tricks that you can do to stay on top of the grout cleaning because if you don’t clean it often enough it does get to a point where you really do need to call in the heavies with the big machinery,” Croukamp says.
