A massive power outage on the other side Melbourne’s CBD caused by a burst water pipe has caused chaos in the heart of the city during peak hours.
About 10,000 customers in the city’s southeast were affected and dozens of traffic lights in the area went out after floodwaters flooded a car park on Little Collins Street, a Citipower spokesperson has confirmed.
The water entered a substation in the basement, cutting off power in the CBD for safety reasons
The site provides power to approximately 10,000 people in the south-eastern part of Melbourne’s CBD.
According to CitiPower, approximately 5,700 customers were without power as of 5:30 p.m.
“We were able to restore power to more than 4,000 customers by diverting power from other parts of the network,” a spokesperson said.
According to VicTraffic, up to 40 traffic lights in the city centre, East Melbourne and South Yarra are without power.
Motorists have been warned to remain alert in the affected suburbs
Some metro lines have also been delayed by the power outage.
“Our crews are on site and working to remove the water so they can safely access the zone substation and assess any damage,” the spokesperson added.
“We keep customers informed of recovery times by text message and on our website.”
