Cairns father and spearfisher Michael Jensz identified as victim of horror shark attack

Michael JenszThe 39-year-old was enjoying his lifelong passion of spearfishing with friends when he was mauled by a shark off the Cassowary Coast, about 160 kilometers south of Cairns, about 12pm yesterday.

Jensz’s three friends watched helplessly as he was attacked in the water.

The Cairns man was taken back to shore for treatment by paramedics waiting at the Hull River boat ramp, but he died from his injuries on the jetty.

Jensz, who was an avid hunter, is survived by his children and wife Lisa.

The shark species that killed Jensz has yet to be identified.

Charter boat operator Gererd Pike claimed he had seen several aggressive bull sharks in the area where the attack occurred earlier in the day.

Kennedy Shoal, where the attack took place, is popular with spear fishermen.

The deadly attack has revived debate over whether culling should be used to curb population growth.

Kennedy MP Bob Katter joined the chorus, saying he would urgently call for changes in Queensland’s controlled cull in Parliament in the wake of the “heartbreaking tragedy”.

“People are being sacrificed for the ideology. There’s no other way you can interpret what’s going on,” Katter told 9News.

“But every time we build safer waterways, we are lectured by officials and activists who have never spent five minutes in the water north of Mackay,” he said in an earlier statement on Facebook.

The Queensland government uses nets and drum lines to manage the state’s shark population.

Conservation groups and environmentalists have argued against extending this to active culling and have instead campaigned for modern, non-lethal measures.

Jensz’s death marks the third fatal shark attack in Australia this year

In January, a 12-year-old boy from Sydney Nico Antique died after an attack by a suspected bull shark near Shark Bay in Vaucluse.
And last week a 38-year-old spearfisherman Steve Mattaboni was killed off Rottnest Island in Western Australia after being attacked by a great white shark
