Childbirth: New mum kicks MIL out of the hospital over comment she made about her grandchild

Published on

It’s safe to say not everyone has the best relationship with their mother-in-law.

But one woman, who recently gave birth to her first child has shared an incident that happened in the hospital which led her to ask her mother-in-law to leave.

Now the “family is in uproar” over the incident.

“I (29F) gave birth to my first child last week. It was a rough labor and I ended up needing an emergency c-section,” the new mum explained on Reddit.

“While I was still in recovery, my husband let his mum come to the hospital room to meet our son,” the post continued.

The new mum said she was “groggy and out of it when she arrived, but I remember this very clearly”.

She recalls her mother-in-law picking up her son, starring at him for a while and saying: “You’re my second chance. I won’t screw it up this time.”

The woman said her husband “didn’t hear it” but she knows she did.

“I asked her what she meant, and she said, ‘Let’s just say I wasn’t the mum I should’ve been to [husband’s name], but now I get to do it right’,” she continued.

The new mum said this sent her “over the edge”.

“I told her this was not her second chance, this was my baby, and she needed to leave,” the post continued.

Her mother-in-law “tried to say she meant it ‘spiritually’ but I doubled down and asked the nurse to escort her out”.

But that move has caused quite the drama within the family.

“Now the entire family is in uproar. She’s crying to everyone that I ‘banned her from her grandchild’s birth’ and said I’m emotionally unstable,” the woman explained.

“My husband understands why I was upset but thinks I should’ve just ignored the comment and waited until I was home to set boundaries.”

The woman finished her post by asking if her reaction was “too harsh”.

Several Redditers made the point that the mother-in-law is still in her son’s life, was present at the birth, and should be focusing on that relationship instead of the one with her grandson.

“Her son is still alive and in her life so how about taking THAT ‘second chance’?” one commented.

“This baby isn’t some redemption arc, she obviously doesn’t care about being a better mom to her son rather she just wants to ‘prove to herself’ while using someone else’s baby with NONE of the responsibilities,” another wrote.

One person added, “I literally could not agree more. Stand your ground, protect your child and good luck op,” another said.

“Honestly, seeing ANY child as a chance at a do-over is completely deranged and people should NOT be normalising this viewpoint,” another said.

Another pointed out: “You’re not over or under reacting, you just reacted. Your MIL needs to understand you deserve grace when you’re in a hospital bed recovering.

“You could be the most irrational b**ch in the world after a C-section and the appropriate thing for her to do is give you time, not going around complaining to everyone who will listen,” they explained.

One women said: “From a grandma, I’m so proud of you for speaking up. You’re a queen! Don’t let anyone, not your husband nor any of the awful family, tell you otherwise. You smelled a threat and took care of it.

“There is no spinning her words to mean anything but she expected to be an overbearing bully,” she added.
