Cleaning hacks: Dirty shower glass looks so good after $3 cleaning hack it’s almost ‘invisible’

A little known one cleaning hack has become cloudy shower glass so good that it seems almost invisible.

The before and after photos of the shower were shared on Reddit’s cleaning tips forumleaving the members of the group stunned.

“I thought you showed us pictures with the door open! This looks absolutely amazing. Invisible even,” someone commented.

The owner of the shower said they decided to try it citric acid to clean the glass after reading about its powerful cleaning properties in the same Reddit group.

“I tried many products including CLR, RMR, cleanser, Clorox etc. and nothing worked. I came across this group and saw citric acid as an option. I got it from Amazon with some knock-off scrubbers and I can tell you with a little elbow grease it worked,” they said.

To make the citric acid spray, they mixed six tablespoons of citric acid with two cups of hot water in a spray bottle.

“Some recommended using paper towels, but I just gave it a good spray, let it run from top to bottom, scrubbed a little, rinsed and repeated four or five times. I used three tablespoons per cup of warm water and my glass is like new.”

When another Redditor asked if the grout in the shower was damaged by the citric acid, the original poster said they made sure to rinse them off afterwards.

That said, citric acid is generally too aggressive grout So when using it, make sure to use it on the glass and thoroughly rinse off any cleaning spray that drips onto the grout.

It’s not safe either natural stone tiles, so choose another shower glass cleaning option if you find yourself in this situation.

Citric acid, which can be found in grocery stores for $3 for a 2-ounce can, isn’t as known for its cleaning properties as other pantry products, but it’s becoming increasingly popular thanks to social media.

It’s become a popular topic in both the Cleaning Tips and Laundry Reddit groups, where members sing their praises for all kinds of cleaning problems.

“Thanks for the review, now I know what I’m going to do with my shower this weekend,” said one.

“Thanks for sharing! I had no idea citric acid could be used for this [cleaning shower glass screens]. I have a large bag of it that I use for descaling and… cleaning my dishwasher and washing machine. I’m going to try this this weekend,” said another.

“Glad it worked,” said one Redditor who previously posted about cleaning their own shower with citric acid. “My door now always looks beautiful. For maintenance, I wipe it once a month with the spray mixture and try to remember to mop in between.”

Another wrote: “Citric acid is also one of my favorite things to use in laundry. I add a tablespoon to the rinse water in the fabric softener dispenser. I wash towels in 1/2 cup of citric acid and let them soak. when the towels start to feel crunchy due to the accumulation of hard water in the fibers. It’s a must-have in the cleaning arsenal if you have hard water.”

Citric acid can also be used clean the washing machine (check your manual first) by adding 150g to the hottest and longest cycle.

The most common way to use citric acid for cleaning is descale a kettle – so much so that the brand has McKenzie’s instructions for this hack on the back of its citric acid containers.

All you need is two tablespoons of citric acid, which you add to a liter of water, boil it and let it sit for 15 minutes before pouring it out and rinsing.
