Anyone who has worked in hospitality, particularly fast food stores, knows the particular odours and stains that end up on uniforms can seem almost impossible to remove.
One mum took her search for a hack or product that works to the Facebook group Mums Who Clean prompting lots of advice from people who have found something that works.
“MACCAS MUMS. The dreaded Maccas uniform arghhhh I wash my son’s uniform after each shift but the grease smell is still there I soaked in dishwashing liquid and water that seemed to have helped a bit but open to other suggestions,” she said.

“I use Biozet odour eliminator liquid, a scoop of bicarb soda and vinegar instead of fabric softener. When I have the time I soak it first, at least for half an hour,” one said.
“I soak my son’s maccas uniform in hot water and Napisan before washing then use the Biozet eliminator washing liquid on a dark wash. Generally gets the grease and smell out,” a mum wrote.
“I use this and fabric softener on my daughters uniform and theres no smell of grease left just a fresh smell,” a mum commented.
“Make sure it’s this one… with the silver on packaging… works on grease from cook at KFC,” a woman posted alongside an image of the Biozet Attack plus eliminator bottle.

“I second Bio zet my daughter also worked at the greasy bird and that was the only washing powder to get rid of that fried bird stank,” another posted.
The 2L bottle is usually $26 at Coles but is on sale for $13. Over at Woolworths the 2L bottle is its usual price but the 1.8L refill pack is half price at $11.
Those who prefer powder and don’t mind a bulk pack can get the 5.4kg tub for $35 at Big W, which is $7 cheaper than its regular price.

Tips that seemed common across the board included washing the uniforms in hot water, soaking in something like Napisan, dishwashing liquid or soda crystals or spraying before washing with products like Aldi’s DiSan degreaser spray.
One person suggested a combination of several things, plus occasional deep cleans.
“Biozet, washing soda and napisan (make up a little container with equal amounts of each) and mix it up sprinkle in, hot water and vinegar as fabric softener. It doesn’t completely get rid of the smell, but it helps a lot. Every few months, soak in washing machine with vinegar. Line dry in the sun and never ever wash with anything other than those 3 items (and socks),” she said.

However, there were plenty that said nothing works and you just have to embrace the smell which isn’t noticeable once you get to work.
“It never fully leaves will always be one with the maccas stench ex maccas kiddo here,” one said.
“Nothing works I did 5 years at McDonald’s and we all smelt the same,” another commented.
For those who can’t find a solution, some people said they hang their uniforms in the garage or keep them in the laundry to prevent the odour from spreading to other rooms.
