Cleaning hacks with shaving foam: The $2 toiletry you should clean the bathroom with if you run out of product

Published on

Shaving foam has become popular for various cleaning tasks and hacks in the bathroom but not everyone is on board with the supposed benefits.

The common toiletry is often criticised for the cost per use and many have doubts over its effectiveness.

Now, cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie has weighed in on the controversy for using shaving foam and given it the thumbs up, especially in one particular situation.

“OK, let’s be honest, people have really mixed opinions about cleaning with shaving foam and I totally get it, but if you’ve run out of your usual cleaner and happen to have a can lying around then why not use it?” she said in a TikTok.

Crombie then went on to detail how useful shaving foam, which costs as low as $2.30 at Woolworths and $3 at Coles, is around the bathroom.

“Shaving foam is essentially a mild soap, it’s non-toxic, non-abrasive and gentle on surfaces making it a really good cleaner. It cuts through grime, tackles water stains and even helps remove stains from carpet, plus it leaves your bathroom smelling fresh and looking spotless,” she said.

The “Queen of Clean” clarified in the comment section that any white shaving foam can be used for cleaning so if that’s what you’ve got, give it a crack.

The best bathroom cleaning hacks that actually work

One of the most popular hacks for using shaving foam is on the toilet floor as many who’ve tried it swear that it removes lingering urine smells.

To use shaving foam to clean a toilet floor, apply the product to the tiles and leave it there for at least 10 minutes before mopping up.

“Not easy to clean, but the results are undeniable (and it really is only an extra mop of the area after the main bulk has been lifted the first time). Didn’t believe it until I tried it,” a mum commented in a Cleaning & Organising Inspiration Australia Facebook post.

The main downside to this hack is the amount of shaving foam needed and the messy process of mopping it all up.

Another part of the bathroom shaving foam can be used on is shower glass screens.

In a shower cleaning hacks video for 9honey Living expert Anita Birges showed how well the toiletry works to get shower screens sparkling again.

“Spray the shaving foam all over the glass doors, grab a brush and give it a good old fashioned scrub down,” Briges said.

“The shaving foam will not only clean your shower, leave it smelling great, but it also leaves a protective layer on the shower door, which helps prevent fogging and limescale.”

The final step is to wipe the glass with a microfibre cloth.

Outside of the bathroom, Birges has also had success using shaving foam to give her white sneakers a quick spruce up before heading out the door.

The cleaning task requires a little bit of shaving cream and a gentle brush like a toothbrush. Once you’ve scrubbed your shoes with the product then you wipe it off with a cloth.

In the kitchen shaving foam can be used to clean glass oven doors according to cleaning expert Kathy Cohoon, the operations manager at Two Maids.

She told House Digest it is effective for this task because of two ingredients.

“Although other specialised cleaners may work better, shaving cream is a safe, cheap, and effective way to remove gunk and grease from your oven easily,” she said.

“Shaving cream effectively cleans a glass oven door due to its surfactants and foaming agents. Surfactants reduce surface tension, enabling the cream to reach and remove dirt, while foaming agents help it stick to vertical surfaces longer. Together, they break down stubborn residues, making them easy to wipe off with a damp cloth.”

To clean your oven with shaving foam spray it on the door and cover the glass, then leave for 20 minutes and scrub with a cloth or sponge before wiping off with a damp cloth.
