Cleaning tips: The cleaning routine that will rid your bathroom of excessive dust for good

Dust is an issue everywhere in the home, but the bathroom often tends to be the most problematic for it.

And thanks to the space getting damp so frequently, that dust tends to stick and build up so much it feels impossible to keep on top of.

Cleaning expert Ann Russell has shared a deep cleaning routine that will combat that excessive dust so that it “never gets that as bad again”.

The ‘TikTok auntie’ detailed the steps to remove the worst of the dust in a TikTok video responding to a plea from @thehopefulhoarder for help to get on top of her bathroom dust problem.

After explaining dust in the bathroom comes from a combination of toilet paper fibres, our skin cells and towels, Russell said the first step is to take a duster mop and run it over the walls and ceiling before vacuuming.

“Use the upholstery nozzle, which is the one that’s got the brush on it – just use that. Go over your bathroom before you get water involved in any way,” she said.

Next Russell said to take a damp cloth that has been dunked in water and thoroughly wrung out and use that to dust your entire bathroom, including surfaces like window sills and the top of the toilet.

“You start with the areas that are kind of sanitary and hygienic and then you work your way in towards things like the loo that might be unhygienic – you’re going to wash the cloth afterwards, then clean your bathroom as normal,” she said.

One area you’ll need to include is the floor which Russell prefers to clean using a cloth.

“I have found it much easier to get a bowl of soapy water and starting at the far corner just wipe, wipe, wipe and do it on your hands and knees as you work your way out the bathroom,” Russell explained.

“It’s a lot easier then to pick up any bits of dust that have been left on the floor and you should be left with a sparkling bathroom.”

While this doesn’t mean we’ll never see dust again, this method gets the space back to baseline so that your regularly cleaning will be enough.

“If you keep on top of it and you get the worst off first it never seems to get quite as bad again,” she says.

To help keep on top of the dust in the bathroom you can try adding a quick wipe down of the bathroom vanity after brushing your teeth at night (or the morning if you prefer).

It helps to have a stash of cloths somewhere in your bathroom so you can quickly grab and wipe as needed.

In general when doing your weekly or fortnightly bathroom clean it tends to be easier to clean if you dust the space with a dry cloth first before going in with a cleaning spray (if using) and wiping with a damp cloth.

If you don’t do this first you’ll end up with damp clumps of dust moving around the surface, which is harder to remove.
