Compare Grocery Prices: Cost comparison of Coles’ new winter discounts range | Supermarket Sleuths

Published on

A recent survey of more than 6000 Coles customers found 66 per cent of Aussies are cutting back on eating out in order to make ends meet.

With this in mind, the supermarket giant today announced it is slashing the price of 307 winter essentials and household staples across meat, bakery, pantry and dairy.

With the new lower prices kicking off from June 4 for 12 weeks, we wanted to know – how might some of these price drops compare with the other big supermarkets?

9honey Money has taken a close look at some of the popular products that are part of this new winter price reductions promotion for this week’s Supermarket Sleuths.

We compared them with those on offer at Woolies and Aldi to see how they stack up, to show you where you can get the most bang for your buck.

Dinner products

Let’s start with some of the delicious dinner items Coles customers are turning to instead of eating out or ordering food deliveries at home.

Lamb whole leg roast

There’s nothing better than a delicious lamb roast for dinner in winter, and Coles has discounted theirs from $15.00 to $13.00, saving customers 13 per cent as part of their new promotion.

At Woolies, they are selling lamb leg roast for $12.00 per kilo which is a dollar lower than Coles’ new winter offering. Although theirs isn’t technically a “whole” lamb leg roast.

A quick search of Coles’ range and none of their lamb leg roast products are lower than this, whole or not.

Aldi has a half lamb leg for $11.99 per kilo, so not a whole one but I think this is a pretty good price and plenty for dinner with the family, followed by Woolies and then Coles.

WINNER: Aldi at $11.99

Chicken drumsticks

Chicken drumsticks are one of my go-to choices for dinner for my family. They are so versatile. I usually bake them crumbed, with potatoes, for my kids or even use them in casseroles.

Coles has listed their Coles Free Range RSPCA Approved Chicken Drumsticks being discounted from $6.50 to $5.50 per kilo as part of their new promotion. I’m not sure if these are their pre-packaged or deli chicken drumsticks.

But a quick search of the Coles website shows their chicken drumsticks in a 2 kilo pack is more affordable, currently $3.75 per kilo.

At Woolies, you can pick up their Woolworths RSPCA Approved Chicken Drumsticks for $3.75 per kilo as well.

Aldi is selling theirs, which are not RSPCA approved, for $3.45 per kilo.

American hot dog franks

I was reminded of how delicious American-style hotdogs are at a recent Parramatta Eels game at Bankwest Stadium.

My partner bought one for himself and devoured it. And they are so quick and easy to prepare for dinner, especially when you are trying to race out the door to take the kids to their many activities.

Coles is reducing the price of their Hans American hot dog franks as part of their new promotion from $6.70 to $5.00 for their 375 gram pack, which is a 25 per cent saving for customers at $13.33 per kilo.

At Woolies, the closest product I could find was the Don Skinless Footy Franks selling for $16.53 per kilo.

Aldi is selling Berg skinless hotdog franks for $11.97 per kilo.

WINNER: Aldi at $11.97 per kilo

Tip Top Pizza Bases

I tend to make my own pizza dough and freeze and use it as needed and this is the most affordable alternative to ordering pizza. My recipe is just plain flour, dry yeast, a little bit of salt and some honey. I portion it out, freeze and and we use it as needed.

Then there are Tip Top Pizza White bases, which are an awesome time saver and prepping one of these is much more affordable than ordering pizza when I can’t be bothered defrosting it or have forgotten to!

Coles, knowing how popular pizza is for dinner, is discounting their Tip Top Pizza Base White 2pk from $6.60 to $4.50 from Wednesday, a saving of 32 per cent.

At Woolies, you can currently pick them up for $6.60.

Aldi doesn’t sell Tip Top but have their own version, Baker’s Life Italian Style Pizza Bases for $3.79.

WINNER: Aldi at $3.79

Chicken stir fry

Coles RSPCA approved chicken stir fry is simply chicken breast slice strips ready to go for whatever stir fry you’re making.

As part of their new promotion Coles is discounting this from $11.00 for a 600 gram pack to $9.00, which is $15.00 per kilo.

I hate to point out the obvious, but it’s way more affordable to buy chicken breast and cut it up yourself, and just portion it out and freeze it for use when you want to make a stir fry.

But I know Coles is focusing on options to speed up making dinner instead of eating out or ordering in, so let’s persevere with this cost comparison.

First, I’d like to point out that Coles chicken breast costs $11.00 per kilo which is much lower than their “stir fry” version.

What the different sales tags at Coles and Woolies mean

The only similar chicken “stir fry” product I could find on the Woolies website is from their Macro range which was always going to cost more at $24.00 per kilo.

But they have chicken breast for $11.00 per kilo as well!

Aldi sells chicken stir fry for $13.49 per kilo.

Beef and pork meatballs

Beef and pork mince makes for a perfect meatball. They are delicious and traditional and buying a packet of perfectly rolled meatballs is a great time saver during the week.

But you know what I’m going to say, don’t you.

It’s way more affordable to buy the beef and pork mince and roll them yourself, portion them out and freeze them for use.

Let’s ignore this fact for now and compare the price of Coles Beef and Pork Meatballs which, from Wednesday, will be marked down from $8.00 per pack to $7.00 for a 560 gram pack which saves customers 13 per cent on this product and works out to be $12.50 per kilo.

At Woolies they have beef and lamb or veal and pork meatballs selling for $18.75 per kilo.

Aldi is selling beef and pork meatballs for $13.07 per kilo.

WINNER: Coles at $12.50 per kilo
