Dogs and cats stealing things: All the wild and hilarious things our pets have stolen

Shoes, a box of tissues, your dinner: you name it, your pet could very well try to steal it.

Whether they’re bored or simply been eyeing up the snack you’ve left on the kitchen counter, pets find a way to keep us on our toes by taking all kinds of things left unattended around the house.

While some breeds are more food-obsessed than others (we’re looking at you, beagles), expect if you’ve left food within their reach, it’s probably fair game in their eyes.

Just last week, actor Justin Theroux’s wife Nicole Brydon Bloom shared a video of the the damage their dog inflicted on a stolen Victoria Beckham high heel.

With all the wild stories pet owners undoubtedly have, we asked our office to share the funniest things their pets have ever stolen. Ensue absolute chaos.

Let’s just say, the answers will have you locking your food and belongings away.

Food, food and lots more food

From a puppy’s point of view, we guess it’s understandable that if they see a delicious homecooked meal sitting on the kitchen bench unattended, why not go for that over a bowl of the same kibble they eat day in and day out?

After all – if we can eat it, why can’t they? Right…

Well, for one of our staff, some sneaky work from their pup left the family without dinner.

They had cooked spaghetti Bolognese for dinner but left to go answer the door.

“I came back to the dining table just a few minutes later and my bowl was sparklingly clean. Turns out my dog had climbed up onto the table, eaten all my dinner and licked the plate clean.”

They’re not the only one to have their entire meal stolen.

In what is truly impressive stealth work, another staff’s pup has worked out how to climb onto the kitchen bench, even getting away with a steak that was meant for dinner.

“We have caught her with her nose in the sink, licking our plates clean,” they reveal.

On top of that, the pup has stolen an entire packet of Lebanese bread, including the packet, and attempted to pry open a tin of baked beans.

And it’s not just dogs who are culprits of dinner theft.

One of our staff recalls they were making burritos one night when their meal was derailed by a cheeky cat they were pet-sitting.

They had grated a bowl of cheese before moving on to prepare other ingredients.

“Looked back not two minutes later and all the cheese was gone,” they tell 9Honey Pets.

”I was mostly just impressed that he was able to eat the whole plate.”

As for the other food items our team has reported missing thanks to their dogs, there’s been everything from a bag of Brazil nuts – leaving the culprit “swollen like a balloon” – to a packet of Tim Tams, two pizzas, bacon and egg rolls and a cupcake from a kid’s party.

Clothes

Ever wondered why you can only find one of your socks out of a pair? Where could it have disappeared to? Well, perhaps check in with your pet before buying new ones.

One staff member says their pup has not only taken “many” pairs of sock, but also a pair of high heels and a brand new Ugg boot.

Another pup found their way into a different clothing drawer.

”My sister’s sausage dog LOVES underwear, I’ve lost about four pairs when he lived with us for a week,” one team member tells us.

“Even found them in my zipped-up gym bag and absolutely destroyed them.”

Technology

That’s right – not even your technology is safe from a puppy on a mission.

One person tells us their Apple Watch was stolen by their dog, while another’s roommate’s dog took a slightly bigger piece of technology…

They recall the pup would “steal everything she could get her paws on”, which one time ended up not only being a MacBook charger, but the laptop itself.

And more random items…

But wait, there’s more. Just when you thought they can’t possibly be after anything else, think again.

One of our staff’s pups once stole and ate 30 melatonin tablets, leading to a two-day nap.

And then there are the tissue thieves.

“Years ago my dog pulled out every tissue in a tissue box as though it was a fun game. She ended up covered in tissues all over the floor,” one person tells us.

Another recounts their fiancés family’s Italian greyhound is “obsessed” with tissues.

“The more used they are the better and will actually go digging through your pocket when you sit down for one,” they share.

“If you have one in there he will run off with it like lightning.”

A third reveals they have to keep the bathroom door closed or their dog runs off with the whole roll of toilet paper trailing behind them.

Someone else’s pup even seemed to be trying to run off to spend some money…

“I was staying with a friend with a dog, and we came home one day to see the dog had somehow gotten my other friend’s credit card out of her suitcase and was running around with it in her mouth,” they recall of the pup’s daring stunt.

“Left the socks and everything else, went straight for the credit card.”
