Donald Trump granddaughter: Who is Kai Madison Trump? | Everything to know including her age, parents, golf career, and more

At the start of 2024, Kai Trump was a relatively normal American teenage girl who just so happened to have a famous surname.

One year on, the 17-year-old has more than 4.5 million followers across TikTok and Instagram, millions of whom only hit ‘follow’ when they discovered her grandfather was US President Donald Trump.

Now the aspiring golfer is cashing in on her connection to the US Commander In Chief, attending galas with the extended Trump clan, and even rubbing shoulders with Tesla chief executive Elon Musk.

Born to Donald Trump Jr. and his model ex-wife Vanessa Kay Haydon on May 12, 2007, Kai is the couple’s eldest child and first of two daughters.

She was named for Haydon’s grandfather, Danish jazz musician Kai Ewans, who was said to be “a potent force behind the development of interest in jazz” in Demark according to AllMusic.

Her parents split in 2018, when she was only 11, but by then she was already used to life in the spotlight.

She’s been attending high-profile events since she was a child, appearing at her grandfather’s inauguration in 2017.

For a long time she seemed content watching her family’s political rise from the sidelines until July 2024, when a shooter took aim at Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Posting a photo taken moments after the shooting to her Instagram, Kai wrote: “We love you Grandpa. Never stop fighting!”

Days later, she took to Instagram again to announce her plans to speak at the Republican National Convention alongside her father, Donald Trump Jr, where she made her true political debut.

“To me, he’s just a normal grandpa,” she told the massive crowd while delivering a speech in support of her grandfather.

“He gives us candy and soda when our parents are not looking. He always wants to know how we’re doing in school.”

By the end of July, her Instagram following had more than doubled as Trump fans and critics alike took notice of the president’s teenage granddaughter, who was spotted spending time with the likes of Elon Musk in the leadup to the election.

Kai was there when he became president again, posting a celebratory photo with the caption: “No one works harder or cares more about the American people. Congratulations Grandpa, I love you!”

She attended his second inauguration in January 2025 and danced with her father Donald Jr on stage at one of three inaugural balls, alongside the president and first lady.

Dressed in a sparkling silver gown by American designer Sherri Hill which usually retails for about $US1800 (approx. $2800).

Luckily for Kai, she received the stunning gown for free from the designer, along with two others she wore during the inauguration festivities.

Since her grandfather moved back into the White House, Kai has enjoyed another spike in social media followers and shared plenty of peeks into life as a ‘first granddaughter’.

She also shares regular updates on her budding golfing career, a passion Kai shares with her golf-loving grandfather.

She took up the sport at age two, according to a post on her YouTube page, and hopes to one day play professionally.

An avid golfer, her social media accounts are plastered with photos and videos of her playing the sport and holding up championship prizes, often with her grandfather grinning at her side.

Kai even competed in the LIV Golf Team Championship at the Trump National Doral Golf Club in 2022, and won the Ladies Club Championship at Trump International Palm Beach Golf Course and Country Club in 2024.

In 2024, she announced that she would be heading to the University of Miami after graduating from high school, where she will join the Miami Hurricanes Women’s Golf team.

“I would like to thank my mom, Vanessa, and my dad, Don, for always supporting me through my journey,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I would like to thank my Grandpa for giving me access to great courses and tremendous support.”

With more than 4.5 million eyes on her across Instagram and TikTok now, there’s no doubt plenty of people will be watching what Kai does next.
