Dutch Princess Catharina-Amalia in hospital for a second day after falling from her horse and breaking her arm

The heir to the Dutch throne is recovering in hospital for a second day after breaking her arm during a nasty fall.

Princess Catharina-Amalia fell from her horse and fractured her upper arm, the Royal House of the Netherlands said in a statement.

The break required the 21-year-old to undergo surgery, forcing a number of official engagements to be moved accordingly.

Princess Amalia is the eldest child of King Willem-Alexander and is next in line to the Dutch throne.

“Her Royal Highness the Princess of Orange underwent surgery on Tuesday evening, June 10, for a fracture in her upper arm,” the palace said.

“The surgery went well. She will remain at the UMC Utrecht for monitoring until tomorrow.”

Horse riding is listed as the princess’ main hobby on her biography on the royal family’s website.

The royal family’s annual summer photoshoot, originally scheduled for today at Paleis Huis ten Bosch, has now been pushed back until June 30.

Queen Maxima’s diary was also changed on Wednesday due to her daughter’s accident while the King will be without his wife for the opening of the Holland Festival, an event the royal couple was scheduled to attend together.

Princess Amalia is currently studying a degree in politics, psychology, law and economics that she began at the University of Amsterdam in September, 2022.

She carried out her first solo engagement in the Netherlands in February, attending the naming ceremony of the naval ship Den Helder in Vlissingen.

And in April, Amalia performed her first solo engagement abroad when she travelled to Madrid, in Spain, where she spent a year living in secret when threats emerged of a possible kidnap attempt.

She had originally moved into shared student accommodation in Amsterdam but was forced to move back to the royal palace at The Hague when threats to her life emerged in October, 2023.

Princess Amalia and then-Prime Minister Mark Rutte appeared in organised crime communications, which indicated they may become a target of kidnapping or an attack.

Security measures around both figures were increased and Princess Amalia moved to Spain to continue her education via correspondence, in secret.

In April 2024 – when Princess Amalia had already returned to the Netherlands – her time living in Spain was revealed.

The princess returned to Spain this year to dedicate a new tulip garden named in her honour, outside the royal palace in the Plaza de Oriente.

In a speech she thanked the people of Spain for “[taking] care of my safety and well-being”.

“Madrid is like a second home for me, especially at a time that was difficult in the Netherlands,” she said at the garden’s unveiling.

Weeks later Princess Amalia attended a state banquet alongside her parents for the visiting Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tarik at Amsterdam’s Royal Palace.

For the occasion, the young princess wore the Mellerio Ruby Parure for the first time.

She was famously pictured trying on the historic tiara in her mother’s dressing room when she was eight, in 2012.

The photo was included in a biography on Amalia published to coincide with her 18th birthday in 2021.

”I love tiaras,” Princess Amalia said in the biography, titled Amalia.

“Show me a tiara, and I’ll know where it came from. I can recognise all the tiaras of Europe. I used to put them on from my mother. Then there would be one on her make-up table and I would have it directly on my head.”

She continued, “I really liked to be in my mother’s jewellery anyway. When I was very little. She was preparing for an important dinner and she shouted around the house, ‘Amalia, where’s that ring?'”
