The Easter Bunny has its work cut out this year thanks to the insane cost of Easter chocolates.
Customers have been shocked by the price tag for a simple box of Cadbury hollow eggs, while Red Tulip and Darrell Lea also increased the price of their Easter range.
Lindt is just… well, let’s just say some customers will be giving the Lindt bunny a miss this year.

There are a few reasons Easter egg prices have sky-rocketed.
There is the reported significant increase in the commodity price for cocoa, and add to this ‘shrinkflation’.
Your average Cadbury 150 gram Easter bunny is now $8 at Coles and Woolies – which, by the way, is a dollar more than a 180 gram block of standard Cadbury chocolate. Just a year ago this same bunny was priced at $6.70.

You can shop around at places like Kmart, The Reject Shop and Aldi, where Easter chocolates are being sold for lower than at the major supermarkets.

At the time of publication, Coles and Woolies have placed some of their Cadbury Easter range on sale, and these price reductions should be in place until Easter.
9honey reached out to Cadbury to discuss the increased cost of their Easter range.
“A worldwide cocoa shortage has caused cocoa prices to reach unprecedented levels, quadrupling since 2022,” they confirmed.
“At the same time, rising input costs across the supply chain have increased the overall cost of chocolate production and food manufacturing as a whole, as highlighted by recent research into grocery prices.”
In response to the cost challenges, Cadbury “have made some difficult decisions regarding pack sizes and pricing while remaining committed to producing great-tasting chocolate in Australia”.
“We continue to offer a variety of Easter products in different pack sizes to suit different budgets and celebration needs,” the statement added.

Those “difficult decisions regarding pack sizes” fall under the aforementioned ‘shrinkflation’ which was further explained by consumer advocacy group Choice.
Choice found “several examples of Easter shrinkflation, with chocolate Easter eggs from Cadbury, Nestle and supermarket chain Aldi decreasing in size, but increasing or remaining the same in price”.

But the explanations behind the price rise aren’t changing how customers feel.

With prices like these, some customers have told 9honey they will be reducing the amount of Easter chocolate they will be purchasing.
“Easter egg prices just beyond a joke this yr. Even a block of choccy $7, high way robbery!” said one person.
Another said: “Easter is gonna be capped at $30 this year for the family lol. Two eggs and a Kinder surprise for the whole family.”

The Easter Bunny’s efforts may also be a little more sparse this year.
Regardless, you can expect a more few tussles over the leftover Easter chocolates this year.
