Ex-premier’s partner banned from contact in rape case

A prominent surgeon and associate of a former state premier charged with rape while on bail has been banned from contacting 10 people, including a woman he allegedly assaulted and arrested.

Vahid Reza Adibthe partner of former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had his first hearing of his charges at the Southport Magistrates Court today.

Adib was charged on May 1 with three counts of rape, two counts of deprivation of liberty and one count of sexual assault after police searched his Gold Coast apartment.

Police allege Adib, 65, sexually assaulted a woman in her 30s at an apartment in Burleigh Heads on March 30.

According to court documents seen by AAP, Adib, along with nine other people, are banned from contacting the alleged victim.

The bariatric surgeon also had to surrender his passport.

Adib was expected to appear in court in person today.

His lawyer Dan Rogers told Magistrate Jane Bentley that his client was on bail after attending Southport police station earlier this month.

“I ask that his actions be excused,” Rogers said.

Bentley granted Adib’s request not to appear.

During the brief mention, Bentley instructed police to provide a brief explanation to Rogers by June 23.

Rogers did not comment when asked why Adib was not present in court due to the large group of reporters outside the courtroom.

The case was postponed until July 7.

Adib has not entered any pleas.

After he was first charged, Adib’s law firm said in a statement that he was “shocked by the allegations made about him and is taking the matter very seriously.”

“Like all persons accused of a crime, he is presumed innocent and intends to vigorously defend the charges,” the statement said.

Adib claims to have performed more than 20,000 obesity treatment surgeries, specializing in laparoscopic procedures.

He formed a relationship with Palaszczuk in 2021.

There is no evidence of misconduct by Palaszczuk.

She resigned as Premier of Queensland and Labor MP in December 2023.
