Flight delay warning after police incident sparked exclusion zone

The discovery of an unattended bag forced parts of Perth Airport are dropped off, throwing travel plans into turmoil and a Police research.

Passengers and staff were denied access to the terminal check-in area this afternoon as federal and state police responded to the incident.

It is understood a man entered the terminal and made threats before dropping the bag and leaving.

It is also understood that a man has been arrested in the city and is being questioned by police.

There were cheers as the terminal reopened just before 6:30pm (8:30pm AEST).

A Perth Airport spokesperson said an exclusion zone had been established on the Terminal 1 forecourt as a precaution, forcing the closure of the terminal’s check-in areas and short-term parking areas.

“The investigation has now been completed and affected areas are beginning to reopen,” the spokesperson said.

“Perth Airport is working closely with airline partners and relevant agencies to return operations to normal as quickly as possible.

“Some delays are expected. Passengers are advised to check directly with their airline for the latest flight information.”

The Australian Federal Police said it responded to the incident along with state police and the airport itself.

The population was asked to avoid the area.

One passenger said the airport was clearly trying to protect people in case of something serious, but criticized the communication.

Another worried about what it would mean for her travel plans.

“[We’re] I’m just wondering how long we have to wait and if we can actually fly home tonight,” she told 9News.

‘And what will happen to the connecting flights. And from there it kind of starts to snowball.”
