Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Adidas Gazelles cause chaos on social media

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is used to receiving criticism on his policy decisions, but he recently raised eyebrows with an unexpected fashion choice.

During his attendance at the opening of Canadian Parliament at the Ottawa Senate Building, for which King Charles gave a historic address, Trudeau’s shoe choice stood out like a sore thumb.

While the royal and other politicians opted for suits and dress shoes, Trudeau sported a bright pair of green Adidas Gazelle sneakers complete with orange stripes.

Granted, the politician still wore a formal suit for the occasion but his statement shoes sent onlookers online into chaos.

“Justin Trudeau is not only at the throne speech, but wearing the most interesting footwear you wouldn’t expect him to wear and I’m just going to sit back and watch with some popcorn,” one person wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

”Trudeau couldn’t even bothered to wear proper shoes to what could possibly be his last public appearance. An unserious man to the end,” wrote another.

One person felt that the shoe choice showed “no class,” while another questioned why “Trudeau felt it was appropriate to wear those shoes to the Throne Speech?”.

Others were unphased by his shoe-choice, sharing that he can “wear what he wants” – especially since announcing his resignation as prime minister back in January.

Meanwhile, some were quite taken with Trudeau’s “funky” sneakers.

“The number of people commenting on Trudeau’s choice of footwear. Those are actually badass Adidas Gazelles and I love that colour combo. I’ve always been partial to green,” one person wrote.

Trudeau and his sneakers became a trending topic on X while Charles gave a historic address at the state opening of Canadian Parliament.

The monarch delivered a speech to the Senate chamber, becoming the first King to do so in the Commonwealth country.

It marked the second time a sovereign has opened parliament and the third time a sovereign has delivered what’s known as the “speech from the throne”.

The previous times were addresses from Charles’ late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. She opened parliament in October 1977 and previously gave a speech from the throne – which still today has her cypher engraved on it – in 1957.

His address appeared to stand in opposition to US President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada as the 51st American state.

At one stage, just before the end of his address, King Charles got raucous applause for quoting part of the Canadian national anthem.

“The True North is indeed strong and free,” King Charles said, with the reaction prompting a grin on his face.
