Gardening tips: Three things you need to know if you’ve never planted spring bulbs before

Spring bulbs are without a doubt one of the easiest things to plant in the garden, as long as you do a few simple things right.

These beautiful flowers include daffodils, tulips and hyacinthsall of which now need to be planted autumn be ready to bloom in the spring.

Planting spring bulbs is as simple as sticking a bulb in the ground or in a pot of soil, covering it with more soil and then waiting for it to grow.

You just need to know which direction the lamp goeshow deep and how far apart you should place them.

At what height should flower bulbs be planted?

The pointed end of the bulb should point upwards when you stick it into the ground. So use this as a simple hack to remind you which direction to plant them and think of it as an arrow pointing up.

If you’re not sure when it’s time to plant, you can plant the bulbs sideways. The shoot will still emerge right side up, but will take a slight detour as it grows towards the sunlight.

And if you approach this incorrectly and plant the bulb in the wrong direction, it will often still grow correctly, because the bulb shoot will adapt to the environment.

How deep should flower bulbs be planted?

Bulbs should be planted at a depth that is twice their height/length. So if your bulb is 5 cm high, plant them 10 cm deep.

If you accidentally plant them too deep, the bulb will be late to bloom, bloom poorly or not bloom at all because it spent too much energy reaching the surface. In fact he is too exhausted.

On the other hand, bulbs that are planted too shallow will end up exposing their new growth to the cold too early, which will stunt their growth. The early growth is also at risk of being eaten by pests.

How far apart should the lamps be placed?

Seeing mass plantings of spring bulbs in bloom is one of the highlights of the season and is usually achieved by clumping the bulbs close together.

This is despite the general rule that flower bulbs should be planted twice as far apart as they are wide.

Either is fine depending on what kind of look you want in the garden, but if you want to place them closer together than recommended, space them one width apart instead of two.
