Georgie Gardner signs off for the final time

With a cry in her throat, the respected journalist and presenter signed off her last bulletin tonight.

“Since announcing my resignation, I have been humbled and overwhelmed by your messages,” she said in a personal message to viewers.

‘Such kindness, encouragement and goodwill feel especially valuable in these turbulent times.

“So thank you, I will miss you, but I am also so grateful that I experienced something that makes saying goodbye so difficult.

“That’s Nine News for next Friday… I’m Georgie Gardner, thanks for being with us, enjoy your evening, good night.”

The final package of Sydney’s 6pm bulletin tonight was a three-minute film about Gardner’s years at Nine.

“I’m blown away and watching that reel reminds me of the horrible hair I’ve had over the years,” she joked.

“But also how much fun I’ve had and of course reporting the news, the pace and complexity of the news cycle and how bringing it to you has been such a huge privilege for almost 25 years.

“From that moment on, Brian Henderson welcomed me into the 6pm studio. It was never lost on me that this role comes with duties.

“The duty to be accurate, impartial and informative, but also to be human, fair and respectful.”

“Being a guest in your home or wherever your viewing space is is never taken for granted and I think you extend your trust.”

Gardner began her career with a radio cadetship at Radio 2NX in Newcastle in 1992.

She moved to Sydney in 1994 to read the news on 2Day FM.

She also worked as a television news reporter and fill-in presenter at multiple networks before joining Nine in July 2002.

After starting at 9News presenting the weekday 6pm weather with Brian Henderson and reading the morning news, Gardner joined the Today Show in 2007 as a news anchor and fill-in anchor – a role she held until 2014.

In 2018, she rejoined the Today Show as a host for two years.

For the better part of 17 years, Gardner has anchored 9News Sydney’s 6pm weekend bulletin.
