Grout cleaning tips: Three things that made my mouldy shower grout so much easier to clean

Mouldy grout is the one shower cleaning job I’ve been putting off for far too long but I couldn’t stare at those tiles any longer without doing something about it.

As anyone who has ever tried cleaning grout knows, it’s one of the most tiring things you can do and I was determined to make it easier and less exhausting.

So when I recently cleaned the grout in my shower there were three main things I did that helped make the chore more approachable and less time consuming.

Use a fun gadget

There are a lot of cleaning gadgets available these days and while some seem pointless there is one I highly recommend you invest in.

The Rubbermaid reveal power scrubber with the grout head attachment meant I didn’t have to push a toothbrush or grout brush manually back and forth over the grout for hours on end.

The $26.29 gadget, which I purchased from Amazon, but is also available at Bunnings, made it easier to get results faster. It also motivated me to clean because I was excited to try it to see how well it worked.

If you want to save some cash, apparently an old electric toothbrush works similarly and some say just as well, and if I hadn’t gotten rid of mine years ago I’d be trying that instead.

Sitting in the shower

Crouching and bending over only add to the exhaustion when cleaning grout and since the sections I needed to clean were the lower quarter of the shower walls it made sense to sit.

To prevent getting my shorts wet and make the shower floor more comfortable and hygienic to sit on I placed a bathmat down before getting to work.

That meant I could put more of my energy into the cleaning without hurting my back or legs.

Start small

With energy in short supply I decided to tackle the shower one section at a time.

The first part I started with seemed to be the mouldiest because it is where the water from the shower head hits when turned on.

So I sat down in front of that part and started scrubbing.

Having already set myself that one specific spot to clean I didn’t feel overwhelmed about the task or pressure to finish the entire shower.

Of course once you start seeing dirty water emerge it is very motivating to keep going so I did the grout directly on the other side of the corner.

I left it at that but found myself admiring how much better it looked. This made me want to do the other two sections as soon as possible, which I did the following weekends.

Those three things might be simple but they helped so much. I’ll definitely be taking the above steps into consideration when I tackle the discolouration from the mould stains.

Being a rental with a shower that clearly hasn’t ever been regrouted there is only so much I can do to clean grout that was already stained when I moved in, so I’m not expecting miracles or bright white results.

But I’ve cleaned the surface mould and grime, which looks much better, and that’s the most important thing.
