Highway inferno after car torn in half in Sydney crash

Emergency services were called to the scene of the wreck on the Hume Highway near Farrell Road at around 9.30pm last night to find the car on fire.

It is understood the rear of the sedan struck a hatchback being driven west by a 48-year-old man before it struck the utility pole.

The impact also broke the pole in half, downing power lines and blocking the highway in both directions for much of the night.

The 24-year-old driver escaped the wreck with burns and fractures and was helped by passersby until paramedics took him to hospital.

The driver of the hatchback was taken to hospital for examination.

The crash is now under investigation.
