Winter is well and truly here, and that means it is officially puffer jacket season!
The puffer is a wardrobe staple, often stashed away during the warmer months only to see the light of day once June rolls around.
But as much as we all adore the warmth these jackets provide there is one major downside that is just undeniably irritating.

We all dread when it comes time to wash our puffer jackets, simply because, well, no one really knows how to do it.
It’s common knowledge that you shouldn’t put it in the washing machine, but when you look at your puffer jacket you’re left asking, ‘Why? It seems like it could easily go in the washing machine’.
(Despite the appeal of ease, we are absolutely not encouraging anyone to put their puffer jacket in the washing machine.)
And then if you hand wash the jacket, how on earth are you meant to dry it?
It seems like puffer jackets are simply never the same after their first wash.

A complete guide to the meaning of every laundry symbol
Thankfully, home organising expert Anita Birges has come to the rescue with an easy-to-follow step-by-step instructional video teaching Aussies exactly how to wash and dry their puffer jackets.
She says the first step is to snap a picture of the tags and use the information feature to look at the laundry care instructions, which will more than likely tell you your puffer jacket needs to be hand-washed.

Birges then uses her large and small Strucket (a laundry soaking tub designed to make handwashing easy) to pop her jackets in along with some warm water and detergent, move it all around a bit to get it working, and then leave to soak for a while.

Now, this is where the magic happens.
You’re probably thinking that this is what you do every time, yet your puffer jackets never seem to be the same. Well, there’s a reason for that.
Birges explains there is a secret step to “get the puffiness back” and it’s probably the easiest part of the whole process.

All you need to do is throw your dry puffer jackets into the dryer, along with a dry towel and two tennis balls, and turn it on on low heat – and that’s it!
It really is as simple as that, and your puffer jackets are going to feel and smell like new.
