Ikea transforms iconic Aussie style staple into a world-first flatpack for its 50th birthday Down Under

An Aussie style staple it getting the signature Ikea flatpack treatment.

Few things scream “Australian” quite like a pair of thongs on a hot summer day.

So, it’s only appropriate that to celebrate 50 years in Australia, Ikea has come out with their own take on the beachwear staple.

Introducing a world-first – the Ikea flatpack FLIP FLÖPS.

The limited edition shoes come in the store’s signature blue and yellow colours.

Ikea is giving away over 3000 free pairs of thongs.

The offer marks the 50th anniversary since Ikea opened the very first Aussie store at St Leonards in Sydney all the way back in 1975.

“What better way to thank our loyal customers, young and old, than with the bespoke, IKEA FLIP FLÖP – a playful blend of Swedish design and the Australian love for flip flops,” Mirja Viinanen, IKEA Australia CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer says.

The limited-edition giveaway kicks off today May 13 and runs until June 3.

Despite being an Aussie celebration, there’s one detail in the new product that might have some Aussies shaking their heads.

If you look at the packaging, you’ll spot the product has been called flip flops rather than thongs, as the iconic shoe is typically called Down Under.

The 50th anniversary celebration don’t stop there however.

Ikea will also have exclusive in-store offers for one weekend only.

From Saturday May 31 to Sunday June 1, Ikea stores across the country and online will offer 50 per cent off the POÄNG armchair series for Ikea Family members.
