Inside King Charles’ close bond with granddaughter Princess Charlotte

Royal author Ingrid Seward has spoken about the close bond between King Charles and his granddaughter Princess Charlotte.

Charlotte, who just turned 10, is the daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales and one of Charles’ two granddaughters.

Princess Lilibet, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has lived most of her life in the US and has had limited contact with her grandfather.

Seward, recalled Princess Diana sharing that Charles “wanted a girl”.

The late royal told Andrew Morton for the book Diana: Her True Story: “I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan,” Diana said.

“Charles always wanted a girl. He wanted two children, and he wanted a girl.”

Charles and Diana would share two sons – William and Harry.

“He once wanted a daughter,” Seward told PEOPLE. ”I would think he has a very nice relationship with his granddaughter.”

Princess Charlotte has impressed royal followers during her many royal appearances with the British royals. As third in line to the British throne, her future role is one of value importance.

The Succession to the Crown Act was amended in 2013 to include female heirs, securing her place in the line of succession to the British throne.

The young princess deftly executes her appearances, sometimes stepping in to correct her brothers Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, seven.

It has been a particularly challenging time for the British royals, with both Charlotte’s mother and grandfather diagnosed with cancer in early 2024.

The Princess of Wales has since entered remission, while Charles’ treatment continues.

“It’s been incredibly tough for us as a family,” the Princess of Wales said in a video released in late 2024 to mark the end of her cancer treatment.

In the video the family played outdoors and were also seen with Charlotte’s other set of grandparents – Michael and Carole Middleton.

Both Charles and Catherine reduced their royal appearances throughout 2024, which also meant limited appearances by the Wales children.

2025 however has seen the British royals return to regular duties together, most recently at the VE Day celebrations, marking 80 years since the end of World War II.

Charlotte’s birthday fell on May 2, with the royal releasing a new portrait of the princess taken by her mother.

The photo showed Charlotte enjoying the outdoors, a wide smile on her face, looking uncannily like her father Prince William.

Charlotte has inherited her grandfather’s love of the outdoors. In fact all the royals enjoy nature, particularly King Charles who is often seen walking around his estate, even during his continuing cancer treatment.
