Trump says he will raise the issue of US arms sales to Taiwan when he meets his Chinese counterpart this week.
“I’m going to have that discussion with President Xi,” Trump said of China’s strong opposition to U.S. arms supplies to Taiwan.
“President Xi would like us not to do that, and I will have that discussion.”
The US president authorized an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan last December, the largest arms sale ever to the self-governing island that China has long claimed. But the US has not yet made any progress with deliveries.
U.S. defense support for Taiwan, which China has long claimed is a breakaway province from the mainland, has been a source of tension between the two superpowers for decades.
