Jennifer Lawrence opens up about postpartum struggles: ‘Extremely isolating’

Jennifer Lawrence says she found the time following the birth of her first child “extremely isolating”.

The Hunger Games actress opened up about her postpartum experience during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival for her movie Die, My Love, which she stars in alongside Robert Pattinson.

The 34-year-old was discussing her character Grace, a new mother who suffers from postpartum depression and psychosis, when she shared her own story.

“I had just had my firstborn, and there’s not really anything like postpartum. It’s extremely isolating, which is so interesting,” she said according to Variety.

The actress and her husband Cooke Maroney are parents to two children, son Cy, three, and a newborn whose name has not been disclosed.

“It changes your whole life,” Lawrence continued.

“It’s brutal and incredible. So not only do they go into every decision of if I’m working, where I’m working, when I’m working, they’ve taught me – I mean, I didn’t know that I could feel so much and my job has a lot to do with emotion … it’s almost like feeling a blister or something – like, so sensitive.”

Lawrence added that her kids have had a huge impact on her career too.

“So they’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best and they’ve changed me creatively. I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor,” she said.

Lawrence and Maroney reportedly began dating in 2018 after being introduced by actress Laura Simpson.

Maroney works as an art gallery director.

The couple got engaged in February 2019 and tied the knot later that year on October 19.

“Then once he was here, I realised that my energy is more important to him than anything else.”

She said these days she’s “a little bit more zen” and “relaxed” about being photographed while out and about as, firstly, she “doesn’t have a choice” about it and she also doesn’t want Cy to ”inherit the anxiety and anger that [she has]”.
