One year ago a few simple photoshop errors led to one of the biggest stories in the world.

A Mother’s Day photo of Catherine, Princess of Wales and her children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, uploaded on March 10 was found to have multiple irregularities.

Some irregularities included Kate’s hair looking airbrushed, Charlotte’s skirt looking odd at the waist, and parts of Prince Louis’ fingers seemingly missing. Royal watchers noted at least 16 errors in the photo.

Many took the doctored image to mean something was going on behind closed doors – especially since we hadn’t physically seen the royal herself since Christmas.

The 43-year-old soon shared her truth with the world on March 22, 2024: she had been undergoing preventative treatment for cancer.

One year on, it seems Catherine and the rest of her family remain impacted by the media storm they were caught up in.

”There was a real sense then that they felt bruised by it,” royal author Robert Hardman told People, “It was treated like some great fraud.”

Ailsa Anderson, former press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth added that for Wales couple, who were trying to deal with the diagnosis alongside comforting their three young children, “it was like being in the middle of a tornado and not knowing when it was going to calm down.”

Prince William’s former private secretary Jason Knauf shared how the royal felt about the situation, telling 60 Minutes that upon learning both his wife and father had cancer he looked, “absolutely awful… the lowest I’ve ever seen him”.

“The problem was that all this crazy sort of conspiracy theory stuff kicked off in the background online was she really ill, but they didn’t want to say yet that she had cancer because they hadn’t told the children, and they were still working through how to tell the children

A selection of UK newspapers’ front pages are splayed with images of the Princess of Wales on March 11, 2024 in London, England. An image of the Princess of Wales and her three children, said to have been taken by the Prince of Wales, was released by Kensington Palace yesterday to celebrate Mother’s Day. Later that day, leading photo agencies decided to pull the image from their respective services due to concerns about image manipulation. (Getty)

The Princess of Wales is back on her feet after sharing a cinematic video of her family last year, announcing that she had finished her chemotherapy.

She soon joined the royal family at events again, and is continuing to throw herself into her duties as future Queen.
