When the British royal family embarks on overseas tours, it is customary for them to receive gifts, and that was the case when King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Italy last week.
But while Italy is known for many exports, including the luxury sports car brand Ferrari, they received something very different during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni – a customised jar of Nutella.
The well-known hazelnut and chocolate spread has been manufactured by Ferrero since 1964 and is one of Italy’s most successful exports.

Now, according to The Telegraph, both the King and Queen went home with their very own customised jars of the distinctive brown spread following his audience with Meloni on April 9.
The monarch’s jar – reportedly embossed with his name ‘Charles’ in gold letters – was presented to him during his official meeting with Meloni at Villa Doria Pamphili in Rome.
“A useful gift to enjoy on the couch on rainy days,” Meloni reportedly wrote in a note accompanying the gift, per The Telegraph.
The King was also presented with a second jar to give to his wife, which was also personalised with her name.

“We were happy to receive the request from the prime minister to make two personalised jars of Nutella available so they could be used as state gifts,” a spokesman for Ferrero told The Telegraph.
The visit with the Prime Minister came at the end of the royal couple’s four-day tour of Italy, during which they had an audience with the ailing head of the Catholic church, Pope Francis.
The royal couple visited the pontiff at his private apartment inside the Vatican, where he has been recovering from a bout of pneumonia.
King Charles and Queen Camilla were also guests of honour at a state dinner hosted by Italian president Sergio Mattarella at Quirinale Palace, which coincided with the royal couple’s 20th wedding anniversary.

During the royal couple’s visit to Australia last year, they received a number of gifts to take home to the King’s grandchildren, Princes George and Louis, and Princess Charlotte, during a walkabout outside St Thomas’ Anglican Church in North Sydney.
A rugby ball, cricket ball and a fluffy toy koala were among the haul.
Whether or not Charles and Camilla end up digging into the Nutella remains to be seen. According to Queen Camilla’s son Tom Parker-Bowles, both his mother and stepfather prefer to spread honey on their toast.
King Charles is also reported to travel with his own breakfast box containing his special muesli blend, which he tops with linseed.
