King Charles seen in public for first time since brief hospitalisation

King Charles was seen in public for the first time since his brief hospitalisation, for side effects to his on-going cancer treatment, on Friday morning (Friday night AEDT).

His Majesty was seen leaving his home of Clarence House, just down the road from Buckingham Palace, in the back of a black Audi.

The 76-year-old monarch smiled and waved to members of the public who had gathered outside his royal residence following the news of his health setback.

“Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital,” the palace said in a statement on Thursday night (Friday morning AEDT).

As a result, the King’s scheduled events for the end of the week were all cancelled as a precautionary measure.

Buckingham Palace said the decision was taken to aid the monarch’s continued recovery amid his treatment for the undisclosed cancer.

“His Majesty was due to receive Credentials from the Ambassadors of three different nations this afternoon,” the statement said.

“Tomorrow, he was due to undertake four public engagements in Birmingham and is greatly disappointed to be missing them on this occasion.

“He very much hopes that they can rescheduled in due course and offers his deepest apologies to all those who had worked so hard to make the planned visit possible.”

The King was back at Clarence House and resting on Thursday evening as palace doctor revaluate the monarch’s diary ahead of his planned state visit to Italy next week, which is expected to continue as planned.

His Majesty is said to be in good spirits and has been continuing to work on State papers and making calls from his study.

Queen Camilla, who had an engagement in London yesterday, didn’t join her husband during his brief hospital stint at The London Clinic.

It’s understood His Majesty went to and from the hospital by car.

King Charles’s diagnosis came following a routine prostate surgery at The London Clinic in January 2024, where the unrelated cancer was discovered.

Similarly, daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales had a pre-planned abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in January, where an unrelated cancer was also discovered.

Kate underwent a course of preventative chemotherapy, which she completed around August last year, which the mum-of-three revealing earlier this year that she’s “in remission”.
