King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark announce dates for their summer sailing cruise on board the royal ship Dannebrog

King Frederik and Queen Mary have announced the dates they are to sail on board the Danish royal family’s historic yacht.

The summer cruise through Denmark’s waters on Dannebrog is a tradition within the royal family, dating back to Christian IX in the late 1800s.

The King and Queen are set to board the vessel on May 7, officially beginning the 2025 season.

They will board from Nordre Toldbod, two pavilions on Copenhagen Harbour that are reserved for the royal family’s use.

Following an event on May 7, the King and Queen will start their first major sail of the season on August 25 which will run until August 28.

Last year in May, King Frederik and Queen Mary boarded Dannebrog for the first time since the change of throne.

Part of the summer sailing tour included a visit to Sweden and Norway, Denmark’s neighbours and closest alleys.

They were also the King and Queen’s first outgoing state visits, which serve to strengthen diplomatic and cultural ties.

In June and July, the King and Queen visited Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, on board Dannebrog.

The King and Queen later embarked on a cruise through the country’s southern areas in August, calling in to Bornholm, Ærø, Assens and Vejle.

They are due to visit the Faroe Islands this year, after their original plans had to be rescheduled.

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog serves as the official and private residence for King Frederik and Queen Mary when they are on summer cruises in home waters or on official visits overseas.

Dannebrog was built in 1931-1932 at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen as a replacement for the previous royal vessel, the paddle steamer Dannebrog from 1879.

The ship is frequently used for official events and parties, particularly during the sailing season.

In 2017, Queen Margrethe hosted the 18th birthday party for her eldest grandson Count Nikolai. He later told 9Honey the event was “amazing”.

King Frederik and Queen Mary are continuing a royal sailing tradition started during the reign of Christian X through to Frederik IX and Queen Margrethe II.

The ship is usually docked at Holmen, on Copenhagen’s harbour, meaning royal fans can see the vessel when it is not in use by the royal family. The location is a short walk from the palaces of Amalienborg where the King and Queen live.

Dannebrog is one of the world’s two remaining royal yachts. The other is the Norwegian Royal Yacht Norge, since the British Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997.
